Seeking advice from gun friends - to move to Germany or not or elsewhere?

My .02 C.....

Did a tour in Italy about 10 years ago.

The European Army is a completely different animal imo, and USAFE will always have my disdain as those dudes never missed an opportunity to drop us in the trees, rather than on the DZ, when they could.

Worse...crews...ever....

These days you will probably deploy from Germany for a year, which will give you about a year actually IN Germany. I would NOT want to deploy from a Euro Army unit as they do not get the training opportunities we do stateside, and have to do more OJT. Not good, depending on your MOS. As a door kicker, I prefer to train my guys PRIOR to being throwing into harms way though, thank you...

I'd pass.

Stay stateside imo...

I've never lived in Germany but somewhere around 1988 I did visit a friend who was stationed there. It's a very pretty country. He loved it there and extended his tour. Don't know how it is now but back then the Rod and Gun Clubs on base had some outstanding deals on knives and firearms. I went nuts on Puma knives - a White Hunter was $70, a Hunter's Companion $45. A CZ 75 was $190. This was before they were imported into the US.
I say go for it. Leave your guns with a trusted friend or relative.
I did live in Turkey for 2 years when I was in high school. Wouldn't take anything for the experience.

I appreciate the input...

As I mentioned, I have lived in Europe for a few months and enjoyed it. I 100% agree that it would be a great experience. The liklihood of my being a victim or needing a gun is nil... that said, I don't like being 'disarmed' for long periods like I would be going to Germany for years.

And of course, there is the problem of long term storage here.

Sitting here last night I came to the conclusion that the life I've built here in the US is pretty darn good. Why mess with a good thing?
If there's still a chance to change your mind, let me tell you that I spent a total of seven years in Germany. My last tour there was as a civilian living in the Heidleburg area of central Germany until 1976. I traveled the entire country and visited the surrounding countries of Europe. I spent three years as a soldier there in the late 50's - early 60's. I loved my time there.

It's not even close to a substitute for the USA, but well worth the experience. To fully appreciate the country and the people you should live on the economy, as it's termed. Germans as a rule need to warm up to Amis, as they call us, mainly because of all the negative press we used to get there. This has probably changed in the last 35 years. Nonetheless, once they know you, the locals treat you with respect and befriend you.

Food is great, beer is wonderful, women are beautiful, weather is not intolerable, autobahns are super, streets are clean and the list goes on. Give it some serious consideration.

Germany is a fantastic country, I would transfer there in a second. The food is great, there cars are the best, and the women are hot. Whats not to love? I'd give up shooting for a couple of years for that.

Get your hands on a 911T and top it out on the Autobahn, you will forget about shooting for a bit.:D

Lots of widening construction on the Autobahn last time I was there. Speed limits around 80 mph.

Yeah, good arguments -
But in reality, there are plenty of stretches of road I can get a car up to 100mph on, and even some where I can do it legally, right here in the states. I've driven over 100 mph before... not that big of a thrill. Not advocating any illegal activity, but one can easily and safely do it out west and north in the open states like Wyoming, Montana, the Dakotas, Colorado, etc. where you can see for 10 miles on flat land...

As far as women, there are more amazing women in the US that I can handle... and frankly I've got more in common with them. Admittedly I've dated amazing international women, but at the end of the day we had nearly nothing in common....

It's certainly tempting, and I haven't ruled it out - I do go back and forth... and it's good to talk it out. Just seems like there are better and easier choices stateside.

move to germany if u want to live with turks and other arabs and get beaten to death.

we have a serious problem with muslims, african and middleeastern immigrants.

its news that dont get to ur tv.

there is sumthing HORRIBLY wrong with a religion if u get pissed of by a silly CARTOON. but when it comes to beheadings, roadsidebombs, suicidebombs, childmolestations("marriage" they call it) and other F*ed up stuff they couldnt give a rats ass.

so yeah move to germany if u want to wear a burkha on ur head

europe has changed drasticly last couple of years.

Malmö sweden is the new mecca

I back up Radium 100%.

Go to Germany just to see what Europe (it is just a name now) has become in the last 20 years. Sickening to see that politicians have sold an entire continent to be raped.

Just a few days ago, an African man got sentenced for 14 years for raping 14 indigenous European girls, only 1 year for each rape the judge sentenced. Welcome to [Europe].

I think if you get a chance to experience something like this and you are willing to give up what you have to give up to experience it, I say go for it.

I spent 3 years in the great "beer state" of Germany and my time was well spent

I know things have changed, but was stationed in Germany 1956-58 and loved it. Traveled around Europe, but liked Germany the best.

There is the negative viewpoint. I agree with Radium. Even if you ignore this, you may not be able to own a weapon to defend yourself with, if some of this violence infiltrates to the area you move to.

I'd consider Germany seriously, especially if you shoot competitively. Yes, CCW is out. But the Germans are serious about the shooting sports. If you can get your foot in the door, head over there and enjoy.

Another thing to consider - European economies are collapsing rapidly, and Europe a year or two from now may be quite ugly compared to today. Germany has probably the strongest economy of larger European countries, but that doesn't guarantee anything.

I would jump at a chance to live there for 6 months or less, but a 2 year term would make me hesitate, especially right now.

As for not being armed, can you live on base, and would you want to? I'd be less worried about being armed if there were dozens of MPs (etc.) guarding my home 24/7. (Not that this is any guarantee, as you saw with the Texas shootings a couple months ago.)

If you have really wide latitude I would likely just choose a nice US state instead.

Germany is way cool (spent almost 8 yrs there, '91 - '95 & '04 - '07), but....

The Turk/Arab/African comment is legit, but generally not a prob, especially if you have any kind of SA.

EXPENSIVE. Beautiful, once in a lifetime experience, but crazy spendy.

Stay as far AWAY from HQ EUCOM as possible. I was at HQ SOCEUR (across the "J-Mall" from them & they are the biggest group of flaming idiots you will EVER see in the military. Plus, Stuttgart is cool/pretty, but wicked expensive, even by German standards & Stuttgarters are the "New Yorkers" of Germany.

I loved Germany, don't get me wrong, but it ain't what it used to be.

I would kill to be able to have done a tour in Alaska.

Meh do what you want, but I see it as a fantastic oppurtunity to learn about a new and very interesting culture. Europe is beautiful, with a Euro rail pass you could travel to many significant historical and cultural sites cheap. When you have leave you could visit Paris, Rome, Budapest, London etc. Heck you might even be able to make a side trip to Russia, I would love to see Russia one day.

Their is a lot to see out their, the US isn't the end all and be all.

Plus it would be AMAZING to drive on a highway where people actualy move over, so you can scream along at 180 without having to worry about morons not moving over.

I hear Afganistan is lovely this time of year, they'll give you a gun and open-carry is required! Or Fort Sill has about the same climate and the natives are friendly, but no open carry...and you'll have to buy your own gun. :D

Seriously, go to Germany, no matter what it's like, it'll be an experience!

You know - I think you made a really good point here. I am VERY pessimistic about the state of the world, world safety, and heck even the state of overall safety in the USA. I think that we are on a collective downward spiral and I honestly expect to see significant rioting and upheaval abroad and in the US, on a scale we haven't seen in a long time. Kinda makes me wanna cling to my "guns" abit more than usual... don't really wanna be on the other continent when it all goes down.

I begin each morning with a cup of coffee, a cigarette, and the occasional sound of incoming rockets or harassing small arms fire. But yes, I do get to carry a gun or two everywhere I go. Worth it? All things being equal, I'd rather be working on a nice fat suspension, smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo.
