El T: sorry for the hijack -- the UR course for my Bday is SOLO!! wanna be my buddy?
i don't know if there are any spots...call miss heidi...

Tex:

I was gonna post a review of HIT but El Tejon did such a good job, i thought my
comments would seem redundant. We (me and Mrs Doc) had an awesome time. i am sure you will too!! Remember: you get out of it, what you put into it.
So, no whining, BUCK UP! load, drink water, tape targets, get back on line and be ready to shoot! Be on the range (early) ready to shoot, move quickly between ranges, (that is the secret to having lots of runs!) we had a couple 'heart-attacks-waiting-to-happen' who didn't have as much fun as we did...

The lecture was compressed so as to allow us onto the Red Range by 10 am first day.
We had all the prelims done by lunch and were into the 'sims' that first afternoon.
We had run after run thru: tower, Orange (both chargers on the Charger Deck and
laterals - but not in the same rotation) Red for moving shooting grounded drills and long distance shooting, and of course Terminator! Then more of the same for the next two days. We had our final day cut short by rain, but we made up the time during HIT Urban Rifle later in the week. Nominally shoot 5000 rounds between the two classes.

Dave:
(for all the AR15 experts i apologize for any inaccuracies, i am only as good as my incorrect sources)

The SP-1 is the original civvie version of the original M-16 with the slow twist and no chroming of the bore and barrel. I saw them for sale in the recent KY Imports catalog.
I have always wanted one of the originals. So i ordered it! I anticipate the AWB will be recalled, so i don't want to buy up 'pre-ban' rifles at a premium only to be able to buy the same gun in a few weeks/months cheaper. I am happy to wait for the AWB to be repealed so i can buy 'pre-ban' style AR's. As for Clint's interest in AR's, it is practical not historical or collectible. I know his favorite recommendation to students is Colt preban, period. But he has no concern with any other manufacturers AR, as long as it runs and doesn't have a bunch of heavy non-working accesories. I have personally had staff recommend: Bushmaster, Rock River, Colt and DPMS; Clint has only ever recommended preban colts.

I have not ever asked him why he has a SP-1, but i presumed it was because he liked it best.

Thanks, Doc - that was a great review. Now I can't wait, only 8 more days! You sure I can't whine just a little when it gets really hot & thirsty? :D

El T, you wanna come down for H.I.T.? I think I know one of the guys who's signed up - I could let the air out his tires at the motel so there'd be a spot for you.

Great review! I should be able to find the time to take DHG1 when the Oregon kwan opens.

Tex:

"You know the drill! I am preaching to the choir:
Drink! Load! Tape! then do it again"

you gotta LOVE that place!! I WISH I WAS GOING TOO!!!
Will you be at UR in Sept?

we are thinking about doing a 'private' class at
the Rifles Only School in south Tejas
for long distance bolt gun, like 200-500 yds
(READ: lots of trigger time, little 'fieldcraft')

wanna come?

Hi, Doc -

Nope, won't be attending UR. I only have 1 rifle that could be even remotely considered appropriate - and I'm painfully aware that "One is none, two is one."

What's the Rifles Only School? That sounds intriguing.

Think we should consider returning the thread to El Tejon? Has he done anything to deserve it? ;)

R-Tej

Thanks for the link, Doc. Maybe I can do something like that someday when I have a "real" rifle in addition to my heavy-barrelled .223.

R-Tex

Doc, the '06? What's wrong with your .308s? I smell "caliber creep"! :p Good to talk to you Saturday, say hello to Mrs. Doc.

Thanks for the offer on UR, but Heidi sez everything booked and since I'm leaving in July and October (thrice in one year--may the black-robed gods forgive me), someone has to hold fort and talk on phone or Earf plunges into the Sun. YOU should know that!

R-Tex, have seen plenty of guys using .223s in precision/counter-sniper/Walter Mitty II classes. The website thingy sez wind averages 20 to 25 mph though. I'd go 6.5 Swede, but that's my answer for everything!:D

Granted, the .223 might work, but it's so [whine]HEAVY[/whine] . Oh, wait - do they have, like, caddies?

El T:

the 30.06 has ALWAYS been my deer rifle.
well, actually i bought my Steyr Mountain Gun (.308) with LPS 1-6x
and my Savage 30.06 with Bushnell 3-9x at the same time.

when i took my 30.06 for the Elk hunt in Tejas, the scope mount
broke, Clint made fun of my gun breaking, Pete loaned me his
Remington 700 HW in 7STW (AWESOME!!) then he fixed my savage...
just before we left he 'mentioned' that if i wanted, he could take the
Savage to the gun show and sell it...and if, maybe, i wanted a Remington
(glass bedded, trigger-jobbed, muzzle-crowned, accurized, PETE-TREATED)
in 30.06 to replace it...(Are you KIDDING ME?!?!?)
so i replaced the glass with a Leupold and took delivery when we returned

R-Tex:

your gun may be heavy, but it don't matter! no fieldcraft!!
we are gonna shoot and shoot and shoot!! not lug gear!
i am certain for a couple bucks we can get caddies;
Heck, you buy the ammo and I WILL CARRY YOUR GUN!
i will send you the dates!

About Clint's book -- who's publishing it? When will it be available?

El Tejon,

I've been looking into attending the same class with my wife.
She agreed to go with me, but was less than enthused about it.

She likes camping and outdoors stuff, but I'm not sure if she's up to anything too "commando".

Are there usually other women at the courses, or is she likely to be the only one?

Also, If she does come with me, she'll be using her smith 686p.
(or her 649)
I know you mentioned that no one used a revolver, but in your opinion could a novice complete the course with a revolver without holding everyone up?

I really want our first course together to be a fun and enjoyable experience. I know if she finds it fun, I'll be able to get her to attend all of the others with me.

Thanks,
JP

West, sorry, don't know about the publisher. Didn't ask. When it will be out? Should be soon, Labor Day maybe. You know how projects go.:D Publishing a book is like herding cats.

jp, "commando"?:D I'm a yuppie scum, office type who talks kind of funny and looks even funnier.:D I never jumped out of a helicopter and wore black in the militree or in my LE daze. DHG is not that physically demanding (should still stretch, but that's my answer for everything).

There are usually a few women in the entry level classes, IME. Higher up the pyramid USUALLY the fewer women one will encounter.

At this class there were 2, the wife of a committed student and friend of Clint's and a physician who had survived an incident. Be advised there is a Ladies Class which Doc's wife, the lovely and gracious (one of the few women that I have met that did not throw a drink on me) Mrs. Doc, has been through that is female only. In fact, Mrs. Doc has been to several classes at TR, including Urban Rifle II! She was in my GPR class along with Doc (of course) as well.

The largest number of females that I have had in a class was 6 out of 20. It was an Awerbuck class.

While a minority of students use revolvers, nothing wrong with them at all. "Slowing the class down"? That's usally my job!:D

The instructors are outstanding at TR and well versed to teaching novices (most of them have worked for the government afterall). They will not make anyone feel that way! Weapon handling, gun fu, is a function of the person, not the weapon, in the end.

I think you will find the TR experience very rewarding for the both of you. Someday I hope to find a women who will let me go to gun school and maybe even come along!:D

Thanks for the info...

I had suggested it to her, but then I began to think I might have done the wrong thing. She was open to the idea of coming along, but I didn't want to have her get "burnt out" if it was going to be real tough, and full of a bunch of commando gi joes, mall ninjas.

So, I think I'll plan a trip for 2 to TEXAS!!
The only down side is that as a trade, I promised to take a pottery class with her.:what: :banghead:
oh well,.. relationships are full of trade offs.:D
I think I'm getting the better end of the deal.:D :D

I wonder if I can learn to make clay pigeons:evil:

We'll be 10 mnutes from Lakeview.
Isn't that about halfway to Idaho just above the corner with Nevada and Californey?

When I went through that was really in the middle of nowhere, close to some good antelope country (Sheldon Refuge over the border in NV).

Grump, that's my understanding from looking at the map. Sorry, don't know anything about hunting out there (in fact, I've never been to Oregon), but that's one of the reasons they moved there--lots of critters.

There's a cutie from Oregon at the Starbuck's I attend. She has relatives down there (she's from Portland) and has given me a lot of info. I'll ask her about critters and see if she knows.:)
