Hello All,

Started working a load for my 1911 with 185 speer gold dots and bullseye.
Speer's manual starts at 5.7 with a oal of 1.20. My question is does that seem a bit hot with you guy's? Has anyone worked with this recipe? Thanks

Sounds right to me.

Alliant powder guide says Speer 185 GD + 6.4 Bullseye is MAX.

A 10% reduction Starting load would be 5.8.

Lyman's 49th gives maximum charges of 5.6 and 6.0 grains for two different 185's but not for the Gold Dot.

As a start load this does seem a bit tropical to me. (EDIT) But RC's info shows Gold Dot straight from Alliant so it is very likely OK.

Regardless of what the manuals say, that is a pretty "zippy" load. I've shot a bunch of them.

Thanks for all the replies fellas. Just getting started with rolling my own.
The first two felt a little peppy so i'll probably knock it down a bit and go from there.

Try some different powder levels. I shoot a 185 jacketed swc with 4.8 grains of bullseye and found that the most accurate for me out of my 1911.
