self-defense ammo for .460 S&W

I guess that would work for any lions or grizzlies that may attack.

As a bonus, I bet that round doubles as an anti-tank round as well. ;)

If 10 assailants are attacking you and in a straight line,

you could save on ammo and place one shot through them all!!!

You're joking, right? A hardcast 395 fn slug at 1525 fps is NOT for defense against humans. With a firearm of that power, you need to go with a low sectional density SP round.

You asked a while back if the big fifty was good for personal defense. Then you suggested using a nitro express for dogs. What's the meaning of these threads? Are you trolling?

Ummmm...yeah, that's about the worst possible choice.

Jeez. Look, you're either going to have to handload something, or run a lesser caliber...correct me if I'm wrong here, but can't the 460 shoot...45LC? Or...something else? I don't know much about that the 460.

One option if you're handloading: people have experimented with lightweight Delrin plastic loads carved down on a lathe or cut from plastic cylindrical bar stock. What you get is about a 100gr full wadcutter doing some unbelievable speeds. I seem to recall somebody crossing 3,000fps in a 454Casull once. Hit somebody with THAT and...oh boy. Somebody get a mop and bucket, stat. It ain't gonna be pretty. But it also won't overpenetrate. ("Hey, is that a piece o' lung on the ceiling?" :barf:)

What you just pointed to...dang, I think it would take MORE than 10 supersized Americans to stop one. Add a brick wall or three for good measure. In any urban area that stuff would be criminally negligent to crank off. Wilderness, fine, but...yikes, not anywhere there's bystanders.

---

Look...the ONLY form of "gun control" that makes sense is connected to the question "what's the risk to bystanders?"

We often get asked "well should private citizens own nukes?"

My answer is "not on planet earth, no. But if it's 400 years from now and you've got your own asteroid mining claim and you're in legit fear of space pirates, and your nearest neighbor is about 150,000 miles away, a nuke-based home defense system might make perfect sense."

Is a 50BMG rifle a good home defense gun in suburbia? Hell no. In the middle of the Alaska wilderness? Or on a sailboat 500 miles out to sea? No problemo.

What's reasonable is connected to risk to bystanders. And that particular 460 load is flat nuts in that department.

The best self defense ammo for that that gun would be a jhp going around 850fps like win silvertip 45colt.

Well, you didnt say "self defesne" against WHAT. So, I will dangerously assume that you mean against humans. The answer is simple. Buy a S&W mod.340 to stuff in your pocket while you are carrying that sutpid 460 around.

I very much dislike that X frame. Too big and too heavy = too stupid for me.

It does depend on what you want defense against! The object of self defense against human attackers is the ability of the bullet to expand within the body once it penetrates. The ammo you pointed to would not expand - it would just go right through. As others have said, a .460 S&W round has too high of a velocity to be effective against a human assailant. I would recommend .45 Colt.

Optimaly, I would go with this:

Then:

Are these legitimate questions? .50 BMG for have enough penetration for a human intruder? Defense ammo for a .460 Smith? .454 Casull for CCW? Something's definately wrong here evonge.

Will this be for carry on your body or for home defense? In my opinion even the four inch is very big to carry. But if it is for both I would also go with the 45lc round. Their are a few ammo ammo choices. I bought some winchester silver tips that are marked for personal defense. When they made the 460 I don't think CCW was in their thoughts. I think the 454casuall would be also to much. It would go through to many things or people. If this is your only firearm you would have to make it work. If you can afford something else get a smith snub that can shoot either 357 or can handle +p 38 special loads. I hope this answers your question:)

Why is anyone bothering to answer this guy's threads? It is obvious he can't be taken seriously. Don't waste your time or the bandwidth with answers.

Me thinks I smell a Troll.. Ya think?

I'm sure you're didn't intend any offense, but I am 13.
I know better than to use a .460xvr for defense.

CZ, I'm sorry. I did not intend to offend you.
I, and a bunch of other guys here, started shooting young too. Way before the days of the internet...
I'm glad to see young people interested in guns and shooting sports. I just wish that some of them would do a little reading before posting silly questions.
You quote the Col. Cooper in your sig so obviously you've done your homework, or you've been raised right.

Envonge,

Assuming that by 'self-defense' you mean defense against other persons--persons who are not unusually armored or hiding behind the engine block of a truck--then no, that's not much of an improvement in appropriate ammo choice. It's going to blow through a biped's body and stilll have 75% of its energy left, which will only be a very, very dangerous waste.

The recommendations above that you use a .45 Colt round engineered for self-defense are good ones, if the .460 is the gun of choice. Here are three examples:

http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpage.exe/showproduct?saleitemid=463160

If you believe you need a more powerful round than those for self-defense, then you must either be thinking of non-human threats or threats in very unusual circumstances.

If you are simply thinking that more power is better and that factors like recoil are irrelevant to how you would shoot a gun in a self-defense situation, you are wrong.

Please tell us more about why you would think of using such a powerful cartridge for self-defense.

I'd just go with some decent hollowpoint .45 Colt loads. They are a very good defense round. The magnum loads are way too much for self defense against human attackers.
