Does anyone know of any company that makes a belt that would be suitable for self defense? I'm not talking about belts that conceal a hidden edged weapon. I'm thinking more in terms of a belt buckle that could be swung around.

For those of you familiar with the martial arts, I'm wondering if something that could be used like the Japanese manrikigusari, manriki chain (basically a 37" chain with 2 weights at the end), or Chinese sectioned chain whip ( kind of sections of steel bar connected by short lengths of chain) is manufactured by any company. Sifu Y. C. Wong of San Francisco was famous for his expertise with this weapon. I actually trained with these weapons years ago, and got pretty good with them. A friend actually volunteered to let me hit him in the back of his leg to see how effective these weapons would be. Obviously, I didn't want to hurt my friend, so I hit him with maybe a 50% power swing. He went down, and basically didn't want to get up again!

Would a heavy leather cowbow style belt with heavy silver western style buckle work for you?

If so, there are cowboy or western shops where you can choose from hundreds of sizes and styles in belts as well as buckles. The buckles are purchased separately.

Bruise,

Any heavy belt- especially with a heavy buckle- will work well. Clipping a lock onto the belt even more so.

John, once damn good with a kusarifundo.

As Dan Flory mentioned, the balderigger V-Garâ„¢ Manriki belt is a great hide in plain view self defense tool.

As they were being discontinued, I bought two. I wear one ocassionally. Great set up. The other is a put away, my nephew will probably end up with both one day after I'm in the nursing home and babbling to myself.

As you have trained in them, you should take advantage of Dans recommendation and pick one up. It is very solid and everything James puts out is top shelf and hard to beat.

Oh ya, almost forgot, it is accessed from concealed to ready in your hand in a blink. People I've shown it to [ accessing it on them ] don't know where it came from.

Good heads up Dan

I hope that your pants don't go down to your ankles when you deploy your belt weapon. :)

Consider a concho-style belt with shiny metal discs rivited to it, it you go for the southwestern cowboy look. Lots of heavy metal to swing around. Personally I think a common GI style garrison belt with a brass buckle is fastest to draw although it lacks the hammer like weight of a rodeo champion's buckle.

The V-Gar belt with manriki will be faster to deploy than any belt that I wear.

I've found if the belt is wide enough to just make the pants loops, it can be trying to rapidly deploy it. If you wear a belt just undersized width wise to the loops, it won't have a tendancy to bind when yanked on.

Long ago my brother went on a road trip Stateside. Brought me back a S&W buckle straight from their factory. Solid brass. One of those belt through the buckle and a pin on the buckle mates with a hole in the leather. Not that I'd ever be able to get the belt off in time to defend myself, but the buckle is heavy enough to.
