Self defense rifle concepts

I find the motion sweeping the safety off very similar to a 1911, very natural. But I've shot both platforms a lot.

Couple years ago I took a carbine class with Jason "Jabo" Long that was slightly different than other carbine classes I'd taken in that he had us engaging and disengaging the safety in between targets and during presentation drills, whereas I'm used to keeping it off until I'm done shooting. His rationale was that should something happen to the shooter, the weapon would be on "safe" if he/she had to be dragged to safety, weapon recovered etc.

It literally takes no time to engage/disengage and AR15 safety, just as you said with the 1911. I make it part of my "presentation" when moving the carbine up from a ready position, just like I disengage the safety on a 1911 as step 2 of my draw.

An AAR from the class:

But for true home defense a shotgun or handgun beats a rifle.
Agree..altho this is in the 'rifle' section, gotta agree with this. NOT military or LEOs..I just don't see a scenario where I need to make 'that shot' out at 100 yards..or even 50..BUT, YMMV and all that. I DO have a 223/556 but it's not for 'home defense' in THIS urban environment.

If your going to use a shotgun, I would suggest loading #4 buck. 00 and 000 buckshot have a tendency to overpenetrate walls.

The only problem I have with handguns is people only fire a handful of rounds every few months from them. If you don't train properly, then a handgun is almost worthless. I've seen more people fail to put rounds on target in a high dress situation with a handgun than any other type of firearm.

People usually find they are more accurate with a ar15 with minimal training. But you go back into overpenetration again, so make sure to use frangible rounds for indoor scenarios.

As with all thing defense related, train with what you have and feel most comfortable with. If you haven't practiced clearing your home with whatever firearm you've chosen I recommend you do so.

I would suggest using all three firearms to do so, you may be surprised which one works best for you.
