Self Glass bedding

Talking to a GS today re: fixing a mag spring on a Rem 721, he noted that the glass job done by someone else was inferior work. He then showed me examples of good work.
How difficult would it be for a beginner to do this? What should I buy/read?

I get the LMGTFY, and I understand that google is a great way to do research. I'm sure that because you listed so many that it must be fairly straight forward, but I was hoping for some encouragement/thoughts one way or another.
I do appreciate your respectful tone though. I am brand spanking new in the realm of gun smithing kinds of things and want to tread softly.

no idea what this is - LMGTFY - but rcmodel told you right - here's the synopsis


buy a Brownell's Acraglass gel kit
buy a spray can of acraglass release (spray wax)
spray the hell out of the gun - 5 coats
follow the Brownell's direction - they may not have invented the idea, but they perfected it...

it's a very easy process and Acraglass gel is very, very forgiving on time, unlike the original acraglass. hint - do the job without the magazine spring or box etc...when done, you may need to clean up around the edges with a sharp small chisel

and - worst comes to worst, you can chisel it all out and re-do it...

Glass bedding is not that hard to do. The hard part is maling sure you use enough release agent on the parts you don't want glued together and keeping the compound from running into places you don't want filled up. I have used paste was, lithium grease, crayons and a host of other materials for release. Playdough, tape or similar to keep the compound out of trigger recesses and the like.
 
Accraglass kits used to come with a release agent that worked just fine. The enclosed instructions were also good and with a little forethought ( & youtube) not difficult to accomplish. But you do need to know what you want to do because things happen fast once you start stirring.
 
RELEASE AGENT IS NOT ENOUGH!!!!

On many guns there are areas where bedding compound can get in, around or under parts of the barrelled action and you end up taking the stock off with a hatchet. Make sure all those traps are filled with Play-Doh or putty to keep the accraglas out of them. A friend once decided to glass bed his Model 1903 Springfield, but forgot about filling the gap at the rear sight base. Yep, hatchet time!

I've taken to using Johnson's Paste Wax as my release agent instead of the PVA solution that Brownell's puts in the kits. For your first gun I recommend getting the Acraglas Gel kit because it doesn't run like the regular stuff....or just buy a tube of that 'steel' epoxy putty they sell everywhere. I have found it to be just as good...and you can pop the gun loose after a few minutes to prevent an accidental glueing.

A smart fellow once recommended that if your gun has an adjustable trigger than you make sure it's adjusted to your liking and securely locked down before attempting a bedding job!
