I'm at a crossroads. I put a beautiful, lightly used satin CZ 75 Compact in layaway two months ago. I'm about $300 short of picking it up.

Well, after I put it in layaway, I found out I owed the Feds more than I estimated, so money is super tight for the next few months. I refuse to go in debt any further, so credit cards are a no-go.

I'm contemplating something I swore I'd never do - sell my Glock 31 to fund another gun. The 31 was my first large caliber pistol purchase back in 1998. It is a great gun, never had one problem with it. It's accurate and I enjoy shooting it.

That being said, I would prefer a G32 for CC. I EDC my 1911 currently and love it. I also carry a S&W Model 38. I've carried the G31, but it's a bit bulky and the only holster I've found that works well with the matte-finish slide is a lowly Blackhawk CQB.

It's not like I'd be selling some rare, one-of-a-kind pistol or a gun I inherited from my dad or grandfather. Glocks are a dime-a-dozen. I could sell the G31, payoff the CZ and have money left over. Besides, the G32 would fit my CC needs better.

What do you guys think?

If you sell one to get another you'll regret it in the future, I always did which is why I don't do it now.

I sold an FNP-9 to fund a no-dash j-frame. I don't regret that one. If I had sold the no-dash to get an FNP-9, yeah, I'd regret that.

I'm on the fence.

Maybe it's time to sell some Reyn Spooner Hawaiian shirts instead. ;)

If its not comfortable for you to carry it and that is your primary plan for the new weapon. Sell it.

The last two CZ's I bought I wasn't impressed with.

The first one, (a CZ97) went straight back to Buds Guns. After inspecting it with my FFL dealer, we both agreed that the quality wasn't commensurate with the price. Buds gave my a full refund and paid for shipping both ways.

The second one, (a $1100 CZ Shadow T) from CZ Custom had uneven wear in the slide and exhibits poor accuracy but I'm stuck with it and CZ refuses to make it right.

So my advice would be to keep the Glock.

If you like your Glock that much, you are going to regret selling it. Is there something else you can sell?

I own a CZ 75 Compact and its one of my favorite pistols to shoot. I would never sell it to buy a Glock.

You will inevitably buy another 31 later on... Doesn't everybody buy what they sold at some point?

Personally, I would wait another month, or use credit and diligently pay it back within the next 1-2 months, rather than selling a gun you like at a loss. CZs are great guns but you already know you like your Glock. Why mess with a good thing, when you can own both with a bit of patience?

Just think how HEAVY CZ will be with loaded 14 round magazine and the problem should vaporize. I have owned CZ75 from late 70s and there isn't anything great about them except oppressive weight with fully loaded magazine in place.

It sounds like you're ready to replace your G31 with a G32 anyhow so why not go for it? A CZ's not any better than a Glock, but it is very different and you might find you really enjoy it. Concerning the weight issue mentioned above, CZ has polymer pistols, alloy pistols, and all-steel pistols. I've got polymer and all-steel CZ's and prefer the heavier versions.

I carry a CZ full-size, and have carried a heavier Tanfoglio. They are heavier than a Glock for certain, but I guess it all boils down to tolerance. Compacts aren't that heavy and this is evidently not for CCW, so since it is no worse than a Browning HP, the weight isn't a big deal. Indeed, it'll be 9 ounces heavier than the Glock.

Now, selling? I've done that plenty of times to take care of family and the like, but there are times I regretted it. I sold a CZ-85 Compact in 40S&W and I regretted it from day one. It took 5 years to find another one and price be darned (but luckily, price was okay). It's a Glock, so you can replace it when you feel like it - though 31's aren't the most common model.

I'd sell, but not because of any anti-Glock sentiment or pro-CZ, but rather because I would not want to go into debt either nor would I want to lose the money on the CZ.

It can be easily replaced if you decide later on that you miss it. I see absolutely no reason to hold onto guns that I don't either like or use that have no sentimental or long term collector value, when I could get something else that gives me even a brief moment of happiness.

I'd sell a Glock for a CZ, not the other way around. I did, for a G32...I have remorse.

Try a Steyr M357 A1. It's not that Glocks are bad they just aren't finished.

I could sell the G31, payoff the CZ and have money left over. Besides, the G32 would fit my CC needs better.

What do you guys think?

I think you've answered your own question.

  • The G31 is not meeting your needs, or you'd prefer something else
  • Sell the G31
  • Go buy either the CZ75 compact, or the G32

And I just noticed that you picked up a bee-utiful CZ75 compact. Very nice grips. Cool S/N, BTW.

You did good.

In general, it's best to not ever sell a gun that you use/like/may need. You'll lose money doing so. Having said that, if finances force you to sell a gun, then by all means sell one that will be easy to replace.

The .357 Sig Glocks don't seem to be as popular as the 9mm and .40 caliber models. But there are still enough of them floating around that you should be able to pick up a nice used one when your finances aren't so tight. Also, you can always buy a .40 and then find a used .357 barrel for it.

Nice CZ, by the way. I have a stainless full-size 75B and it's probably my favorite gun of all the ones that I've owned. I shoots well and fits my hand perfectly.

Congrats on the new purchase.
