I'm looking to sell my handgun in North Carolina. We have this great law that you have to have a pistol permit or a CCL to buy a pistol. I have a few questions.

- How do I make sure that what someone has is legit?

- Is the permit good for only one handgun purchase? If so, do I need to do anything with their permit? Sign it?

- Do all CCL's (or whatever they're called) look the same in each county?

- Do I need to do anything besides take a look at their DL and their permit? I see some people saying they must have a bill of sale. I don't see where that's necessary.

Anything I should know as someone who has never done this before?

Biggest thing to know is that you are not the state and have no requirement besides being "reasonable sure" that the person buying is not prohibited. For NC, you either need to receive a pistol purchase permit in exchange for the pistol or view their NC CCW card. It would make sense to likely view their drivers license as well since the CCW has no picture on it but thats not codified anywhere that I'm aware of.

A purchase permit can be used for one handgun (must be exchanged). A CCW has no limit associated with it.

As far as I know, all CCW are the same in NC. Cheap looking laminated paper signed by the owner with no picture. Number should match the drivers license or state ID.

Bill of sale is not required. Some like doing it for "protection" but I would rather keep as much off the books as legally possible.

With all that being said, I moved away about a year ago. I remember hearing about a slew of new gun laws coming through that were supposed to eliminate the pistol purchase permits and other beneficial changes. Worth taking a look and talking to the local sheriff to see where the new laws are at.

This has changed... Mine was not laminated, and the permit number no longer matches my DL number. Social Security number is now all X's as well...

If you don't feel good about it, don't do it. Use an FFL if you're worried.

In a private sale, the seller does NOT take the permit from the buyer. Only an FFL is required to take the purchase permit from the buyer. State law says only that the buyer must have a permit, not that he must turn it over to the seller or even present it for the sellers inspection.

Can't help on this one, but thought I would keep the pattern going.

You must not have reason to believe they are prohibited from owning a gun or a resident of another state. Seeing a DL and permit more than fulfills both of those requirements.

I encourage you to start another thread on bills of sale and watch the magic. They are not required by law but they make some people feel warm and fizzy inside.

I know you've already done it, but I'll dispense my pearls of wisdom anyway. If something smells off, don't do the deal or take it to an FFL. If the buyer backs out when you mention the FFL, just re-post and find another buyer.

Only true for FFLs, not for private sales.

Sadly, purchase permits did not go away.

I wouldn't ask the police for legal advice any more than I would ask a divorce attorney for marriage counseling. State laws are on the web, and Grass Roots NC will be happy to help you understand them. tluxtele Could also join the good folks at Carolina Shooters Club for more help with state laws and trade opportunities.
