Selling a Handgun

Let me get this straight...

I'm selling a handgun--I'm in California--to a guy in Indiana.

According to my FFL-holding dealer, a local range, they said I don't have to go through them to ship my handgun to the buyer's FFL holder--they say I can ship it straight to the buyer's FFL holding dealer of choice.

Is this correct?

Umm not sure. I'd imagine it would have to be overnight, but it would be legal.

Kind of like sending a gun back to the manufacturer, over night fedex. ?

Thankfully, I'm not in Calif. Here's what I've done and it's worked. I get the FFL of the dealer I'm shipping the handgun to. You should verify the FFL is valid by going here

You don't want to ship the gun to someone with an expired or forged FFL. I box it up good and take it to UPS/FED Ex with the FFL in hand - sometimes UPS/Fed Ex will want to see the FFL before accepting the package. They require handguns be shipped overnight, this no doubt makes it a challenge for their employees to steal it.

You must have the FFL to use the Post Office to do this, your dealer can help you do that but it could introduce more hassle into the process than you want.

However; some FFL holders here will not receive a gun unless it comes from another dealer. But thats up to the FFL on the buyers end.

I wouldn't ship the gun to an F.F.L. until I had a copy of his license signed in red, green, blue, purple, or some other color of ink.
