Sorry if this is in the wrong section, but I'm looking for an explanation on selling a shotgun online...never tried it and I want to take a shot at it.

Basically, where would be the best place to post? Also, do I need to contact an FFL before I even make a listing or can it be done after the gun is sold?

There is a for sale section here - certain post counts and other restrictions apply, as there is on TFL, Shotgunworld and general auction sites like gun broker, auction arms, etc.

Depending on where you live, you may be able to ship FTF for in-state sales or directly to the buyer's FFL if out of state - that is a FFL thing. Some will accept shipments from non-FFLs, some will not./

The buyer will have his FFL contact you after the sale with the shipping instructions (after you receive the money)

Also, do I need to contact an FFL before I even make a listing or can it be done after the gun is sold?
IF the buyer's FFL (his responsibility and his cost) will accept shipments from a non-FFL holder (you), then you don't need to contact an FFL at all. And as has been noted, if the sale is local/in-state, you may not need to go via an FFL.

If the sale is across state lines and the buyer's FFL requires that all items he receives be shipped from an FFL, you will need to contact an FFL local to you that will ship for you, and ask him what his fee will be for that service. I wouldn't pay more than about 10-15 bucks plus his shipping cost, personally. I'd personally start asking around and find a good local guy that will not overcharge you, just in case the buyer's FFL requires shipment from an FFL. It's also handy to have a good FFL that can receive/transfer firearms to you for a minimal charge. I've purchased about 7 long guns via the forums and/or gunbroker and haven't had any problems.

For the receiving FFL (the one who transfers the firearm to the buyer), I wouldn't pay more than about $25 (generally around $20) for that service. But as the seller you don't have to worry about that. Good luck.

What are you selling, out of curiosity?

It's a 1957 Ithaca 37r Deluxe. Absolutely beautiful gun, 95+%...problem is, I've discovered that the barrel was cut by the previous owner from 28 to about 25 inches (could have fooled me, still looks amazing). It's an excellent deer gun (open cylinder) but I'm trying to make some cash for a duck gun. Willing to sell for cheap. If you or anyone else may be interested, please please please let me know. Thanks for the help. I just wanted to make sure I didn't run into any legal hoops before placing it for sale online.

Sounds nifty. You might consider posting it in the classifieds section on this site, with some good pics, for your bottom-line price. Probably sell quick.

Thanks so much for the tips. Also, assuming I sell the gun, what type of info do I need to get from the seller to verify identity? I know it sounds like a dumb question, but I've never sold a gun online before and I want to make sure it's not going to some wacko.

Depends on state law. In most states, and at the Federal level: none. Most states' and Federal law says that you cannot sell a gun to a person you know or have reasonable cause to believe is prohibited, but does not require you to verify anything. Same state resident, you can sell directly to them. Out of state resident, the gun has to go through an FFL who has to do the identity verification and background check anyway.
