Alternately, remove the short barrel (replace it with a long barrel if you wish) and sell it as a normal "GCA / Title I" rifle.

If done this way, don't you also need to write a letter to the BATFE to have them remove it from the registry before you transfer it?

No. You don't have to. They say you can let them know that you did it, but it is not required.
