I bought some exploding rifle targets recently and were a blast. I bought them over the counter and was wondering if it's legal for me to sell them to another person (without any license or anything)?

I'm speaking of the state of Maine if that makes a difference.

Thanks in advance fellow High Roaders :)

Well, considering you do not have to have a FFL to sell ammunition, and those exploding targets are not ignitable by fire, I would think it would be fine to sell the exploding targets. I believe they are a binary compound and as long as they are not mixed, you can transport or otherwise do as you wish. However, your local laws may differ. I would ask a local Sherrif or police person.

I bought some and asked a buddy deputy about any known legal issue with it. He checked and only found that so long as it is not ignitable by fuse (not just fuse, just an example) its legal to use. As I understand it, the exploding targets are not a fire hazzard.

NEVER take legal advice from a cop. If you need legal advice, consult an attorney.

As the latter and not the former, I feel compelled to correct your assertion ...

if you want to know the law, ask neither a cop nor a lawyer, ask a criminal.

Lawyers don't know the law either, we gotta look it up, research it, interpret it, check precedent ...,

criminals, now they know the law.

You can be reasonably confident of getting correct information from an attorney. Most cops I've met are barely literate mouth breathers and should NOT be trusted for legal advice on any matter.

While cops are not the ones to ask, that is just uncalled for. Not all cops are like the guy from Canton.

It may have been uncalled for, but he makes a good point, and his experience parallels mine.

I am KIDDING!!
I realize that humor and sarcasm don't come through very well.
I know good cops and bad ones.
I've unfortunately met a lot more of the former high school bully types who went into LE work because it allowed them to continue being bullies, than I have those who went into it because they wanted to serve their communities.
Cops these days are not like they used to be. I've noticed a big difference between the older cops and the kids who are going into it now.
The younger generation seem to gravitate towards the shaved head and the Gestapo/Stasi attitude.
The reality is the vast majority of them that I've met don't know the laws they enforce, and tend to make up BS laws on the spot.

My best friend's younger brother has been a cop for over 10 years now and he wants out, because it's gotten so political.

The best way to find out would be to have a lawyer write a letter to the BATFE's Technical Branch.
After all, they're the ones you'll have to deal with, if you break the law.

I thought about buying some Tannerite, but I have an aversion to explosions/loud noises.

I know some very literate and intelligent cops too, but they are outnumbered by the bullies with badges, the guys with bad attitudes, and the guys who were otherwise unemployable. That's not the point of this thread though... so I'll reiterate my point that was germane to the question at hand... don't seek or take legal advice from cops.

Thanks for the responses, let's not turn this into a cop/lawyer debate but see if anyone else has any insight.

crracer - you are correct that they are not flammable but must be mixed prior to shooting and only then can be exploded by a rifle cartridge, most pistols and shotguns won't do it. (2,000fps round uncoated I believe).

Having worked with a few attorney's, let me say that they are not always right. I have seen and heard attorneys give the wrong legal advice and then had to show them in the law where their interpretation of the law was wrong. They are not infallible. Your best bet is to research it yourself, then ask a LEO and an attorney. That way you will be very well versed in that aspect of the law.

What is a realistic safe distance from the target, when shootnig a single container of Tannerite?
I was looking at a knockoff at the LGS. It came in a clear plastic jar, about 1/2 qt total volume.
It says 100 yards. Does it really blow that hard?

Yes it's Tannerite I think. It does come in clear plastic jars and say 100yds minimum, we put it at 50yds the first time and that was sufficient. I figured 35 yds is the closest I'd put it but it only goes off (so I'm told) by rifle shots.

No it is a single clear plastic jar, it has white 'styrophome' BB's and a pouch inside full of grey powder. You open the pouch, mix thoroughly and it's ready.

You do what you want, I'll do what I want. I'm reasonably certain that if the neighbors were to call someone about an explosion, it's probably not an attourney. If you had checked with the local law enforcement, know who you talked to, and get paid a visit to check out a distrubance, you're probably going to be ok.

Anyway, you're probably NOT going to be doing this in city limits, so the local police are of no consiquence, but the sherrif's office would most likely be the responding units. If I ask my local deputies, they check around and get back to me, I'm confident with their response. I was just referring to setting the stuff off, not dealing with the actual selling of the product.
