I bought some of this and was wondering whether anyone has used this on game? I would like to know your thoughts and experiences, pics are very much welcome. I would like to hunt wild hogs and deer with this and I am quite certain it will do the job I just want to know if anyone has any adverse experiences with it.

7.92 196 grain soft point bullets seems like a bit much for deer. Florida's deers are on the small side. I have only used these bullets on cardboard and the occasional tannerite thru my k98.

I have taken several deer with this exact load, 196 gr SPCE. All were one shot kills, complete penetration and displayed very good expansion. I have chrono'd most of the commercial 8 x 57 loads and most are sadly underloaded. The S&B loading, however, is a full power load (2450-2500 fps in my 98K) and has grouped well in my rifle. It is the load that I most often suggest to people with a 98K, and it helps that it is very reasonably priced as well.

Stay away from PPU in 8 x 57, 196 gr loads unless you will be happy with 2100 fps loads.

S&B , 196 gr SPCE, is about the best , reasonably priced ammo out there for the 8 x 57.

I use the 173 gr. 7x57 SPCE built and it is superb, killed a lot of different breeds of deer , I would have no problems using that bullet on up to elk size game.

On the several deer that I killed with it, there was complete pass thru so did not recover the bullet. But the exit hole was very large indicating good expansion. Shots were right behind the shoulder contacting ribs bones only.

The deer I killed were 100-120 lb live weight does. So to me this indicated that they expanded well on relatively small deer , light bullet resistance

Cool, I was gonna use prvi partizan 8mm mauser on deer this season but that stuff has a very light recoil in comparison. I looked up its specs and its running only about 2100 fps. Probably just gonna shoot it up and use the brass.

regarding the PPU ammo, it chrono'd 2050 fps in my 98K. If you are a reloader, you can pull the bullets and powder and make what is called 'mexican match " ammo with the PPU and get it up to 2450 fps quite easily. Get 5 boxes of cartridges, making sure they are the same lot number. You pull the bullets, dump and weigh the powder from 5 cartridges to get an average, then pull all the bullets and dump the powder into a powder measurer. You increase the charge using this powder until you get the velocity you want. On the lot i was using, the average charge was 42 grs at 2050 fps. I increased the charge, using a chronograph to clock the loads and watching for any pressure signs. I ended up with a charge of 49 grs for 2450 fps and reloaded with the same powder and bullets and ended up with 4 boxes of full power loads.

All of the deer and pigs have been complete pass throughs, so never recovered a bullet. Based on the exit wounds though I would guess pretty much full expansion on all of them.

Here's a good write up from Chuck Hawk's website about the 8x57.

He talks about how having the two different types of loads adds flexibility to your shooting experience.

Use the PPU and other lower power rounds to simulate a 30-30 like experience for appropriate circumstances and use the hotter S&B class loads for when you want a more 30.06 type of shooting experience.

From that perspective, it gives you the "2 for 1" mindset for your rifle.

I'm new to 8mm with a Yugo M48 and plan to familiarize with both types of cartridge. For the size of Texas deer, I'd be comfortable with the PPU stuff and enjoy the added benefit of less recoil. If I can do some hog hunting, however, S&B will give me peace of mind in knocking those mean SOB's down.

A few years ago I killed my largest bodied deer (up to that point in time) with that exact load in my old Kar98k. He wa hot on the trail of a doe about 70 yards out. One shot and he dropped. I didn't read through the other comments but Sellior and Belliot and Prvi Partisan (PPU) are Czech made and load hotter than US brands. I don't have my manuals with me but I think they are around 280 ish fps while 150 grain winchester and Remington is only around 2500 fps. This is mainly for safety reasons as there are some very old 8mm mauser rifles. Know your rifle!

Before I worked up handloads for my VZ-24, the S&B 8mm SPCE was the most accurate commercial ammunition I found. I took several deer with it, all through and through, all instant or near instant kills. IHMO, it's the best commercial 8mm ammunition you can get.
