In light of the current economic and political climate, I've decided it's imperative that I purchase a long gun with more versatility than my trusty Ruger 10-22. I used to have a decent "arsenal," but the arrival of my first child and a period of very tight finances (but I repeat myself) forced me to sell much of it.
I aspire to own a black rifle again, but the truth is that the guns I (think I) really want aren't available yet. I like the XCR in principle (and loved my now-sold Robinson VEPR-K), but want to see how the ACR and SCAR compare. So I probably won't be buying a black rifle until next year.
In the meantime, I'm thinking about purchasing a semi-auto shotgun. I shot a Remington 1100 a while back that I really enjoyed, and the 18" FN SLP has also caught my eye. I've never owned a shotgun bigger than a .410, and never a semi-auto shotgun. But my understanding is that the poor reliability of semi-auto shotguns is mostly a thing of the past. None of the semi-auto shotguns I've shot over the past couple of years had any failures, and I loved the speed with which I could put large amounts of lead on target.
The shotgun appeals to me because I see it largely as a defensive tool that can also be used to hunt a wide variety of game if necessary. (Yes, I'm kind of envisioning whatever I purchase as my SHTF go-to gun -- both "intruder in my house" SHTF and "the people are rioting" SHTF.) I'd really like to buy a black rifle now, but the more I think about it, the shotgun just seems more versatile.
What do you guys (and gals) think? If you could only own one long gun for everything, would you pick a semi-auto shotgun, or something else?
