Can somebody give me a list of all semi auto sniper rifles in these two calibers? I am looking for a companion rifle to the bolt actions and many are prohibitively expensive, so a price for a generally good cond rifle with a good bore is appreciated as well

Firstly, unless you're going to be shooting PEOPLE, it's not a sniper rifle. Second, most of these rifles aren't true sniper weapons, but more designated marksman weapons. They're big, they're powerful, they're quite accurate, but they're not the half-MOA you'll expect from a sniper weapon. 1-2 MOA is more what you'll be looking at.

I'm pretty sure the only semi-auto 8mm is the Zastava M76. As for 7.62x54R, there's a few choices:

Romanian PSL: The cheapest option, available for under $700. Inexpensive, reliable, pretty accurate, lightweight, and has a great muzzle brake. The major downside is the scope that comes with it is bad and really should be replaced. It takes a standard Dragunov-style optics mount, and BP-02 adapters exist that allow you to use any Weaver-based scope. Mine's wearing a Simmons 6-18x50.

SVT-40: The original semi-auto 7.62x54R rifle. These can be had for around $1000. From what I've seen, they're very lightweight (8.5 pounds), reliable, and have a good muzzle brake. They usually have incredibly nice wood for a surplus gun, as they were rearsenaled after World War II and never used again. Just good-looking rifles. This is your lightest-weight option.

Dragunov SVD / TIGR: The real deal, but prohibitively expensive.

Chinese NDM-86: High-quality Chinese clone of the SVD, usually in .308. Also very expensive, though these are probably the best choice for someone seeking a real SVD.

Oh come on WardenWoof as the expert on rifles you should know better,,,,LOL!

The Egyptian Hakim is also a 8mm semi auto. I doubt anyone would consider it a "sniper" rifle though.

Wow! That's some crazy looking stuff you have going on there!

How'd you mount that scope?

Romanian PSL-54C is the way to go, in my opinion. They are priced right, mags are reasonably priced (compared to other options), and pretty darn accurate once you can figure out what they like. 7.62x54r ammo is ubiquitous and darn cheap.

That Hakim is the bombalaka'anapali!

Mine's pretty accurate, I'll have to try that ammo brand sitting there...

What the devil is that, MJ? The scope looks Eastern Bloc with the lever-lock, but the action looks weird.

It's a German Gewehr 43. Note the distinctive short angled magazine, that little knob protruding at an angle on the left side - which I believe is the cocking knob, and the typically German leather buckle on the right side of the stock. I believe that scope is a ZF 4. I'm not sure of the proper designation; ZF-43?

All are nice guns, the question is what besides the PSL can I afford?

ONLY YOU CAN ANSWER THAT! SORRY WE WASTED YOUR TIME.

You can get an Hakim for around $500 if you can find one. Then add a mount llike 451 and scope it. That's in the ballpark of a PSL.

If you can find one,,LOL. You can get one for $1.75 if you can find one,,,,you can hang pearles on a pig but you still got a pig.

But that's not question is it. You can a real FN49 with scope and accessories for $3K.

If he wanted to spend wisely get a .308 M14M/M1A1

He obviously doesn't want a .308 M14M/M1A1...so I don't understand how that would be wise spending for him.

Either the Hakim or the PSL seem to be the way to go for a cheap (relatively) rifle in those calibers.

Don't forget the SAFN/ FN-49. It's at least as good as a Garand, probably better. You can get one for $500 to $800 from the Egyptian contract. That's on par with a PSL, for a rifle that is certainly better quality. The only drawback from mine was it dented brass up something awful. But it was dead accurate and very reliable. Has a fully adjustable gas system and a ten round magazine. Forerunner to the FN series, and one of the all-time classic rifle designs.

I kick myself DAILY for letting mine slip away. DAILY!
