that ought to clarify the interpretation of "straw purchase" in the eyes of the ATF.
 
But if you buy a gun and shoot it and decide it's not really what you want: A month or three later if you decide to trade it off, I don't see that as any form of straw purchase.

Not that I'd ever plan ahead regarding trading material, of course. I shun thoughts of nefarious activities to the greatest extent possible...

however, if you are buying with the intent of providing it to someone else, be it for a future undetermined swap with a friend whom you know isn't a crook, technically, it is still a straw purchase.

the issue is the intent when you purchase the firearm. is it really for you, or for someone else? think about that. if you are going to purchase it with the intent of trading it, reselling it, or buying it for someone else, you are committing a straw purchase.

that is what Preacherman had suggested. purchasing something with the intent of trading it is in fact, by letter of the law, a straw purchase.
