Sending Gun to S&W - Have Questions

After continued testing of my Model 29, it appears that there may be some fundamental issues, reasonably fixable only by S&W.

The gun no longer spits solid matter, but appears to deflect powder gases back at the shooter. Why this is, nobody seems to be able to tell. Improperly bored chambers in the cylinder seems to be a possibility. Spitting/blowback doesn't seem to happen with all of the chambers, just one or two. The forcing cone was made out of square. That tends to indicate that whoever assembled the gun might have been having a "bad day".

That having been said, I need to ship the gun to S&W. I'll be calling them later today, but I have some questions before I deal with them.

1. I ONLY want the spitting problem fixed. I don't want any refinishing, unnecessary parts replacement, "lawyer" modifications, etc.

2. I CANNOT have the gun returned to my apartment. There's no desk or rental office, there are a lot of kids running around, and according to at least one website, there's a registered sex offender in the building. Can I have the gun returned to my work address (the boss doesn't mind) or will I have to pick it up at UPS (or whomever they use to ship it)?

3. Are there any other considerations I need to be aware of?

If or when you return the gun to Smith & Wesson they will go through it with a fine tooth comb. Then they will replace any and all parts they find to be defective and/or not up to factory standard. If the cylinder needs to be replaced they will use the best they have, but it might not be the same as the one you have (read that to mean it might not have recessed cuts for the cartridge rims). I doubt that the barrel will be replaced, but they might have to set it back, face it square, and cut a new forcing cone. They will not add any features that didn't come on the gun originally (read that to mean "the lock") and the won't refinish it unless the work they do requires that some parts, and/or the whole gun requires refinishing. If the work isn't done under warrantee they will send you a quote with a summary of the work and what it will cost. Then you can take or leave it. They will return the gun to whatever address you specify except a P.O. Box number.

I just returned an older 586 for firing pin bushing replacement. If you go the the S&W website and email them, they will answer your questions and give you instructions on how to ship via FedEx prepaid at their expense.

S&W factory rework

S&W will take out, throw away and replace any non-factory springs. Also, I advise having it returned to an address where someone is available to accept it personally from Fedex. Fedex routinely leaves the box from S&W at my door. Fortunately, it can't be seen from the street.
