The match this month will be:

IIIIT'S BIRD SEASON!!

Now then, it's two weeks to bird season here in the U.P. Time to haul out your scattergun and get some last-minute practice.

Here's your target.

Three classes this month.

Small Bore/Gauge Shotgun: Any .410 bore or 28 gauge shotgun.

Medium Gauge Shotgun: Any 20 or 16 gauge shotgun.

Large Gauge Shotgun: Any 12 gauge or up shotgun.

One entry per class. No practice shots.

Procedure:

You get one cold shot per entry. Distance is 25 yards. All chokes are allowed, from Cylinder to Extra-Full Turkey.

Scoring:
Your score is the total number of pellets inside the first two rings of the target (Which, BTW, are the same size as a clay target.)

Good luck!

ACP230 and I got to the range this evening. (Well well, we're the first ones to shoot a match! This hasn't happened before...)

Anyway, we both shot the match. Here are the scores.

Little Loudmouth
Small Bore/Gauge
FIE Bronco .410 single-shot
2 1/2 inch 7 1/2 shot
Full choke
Score 3.

Little Loudmouth
Medium Gauge
Winchester Model 12 16 gauge with Poly-Choke & red-dot scope
2 3/4 inch 6 shot
Full choke
Score 6.

Little Loudmouth
Large Gauge
J.C. Higgins M20 (High Standard 200) 12 gauge
2 3/4 inch 8 shot
Full choke
Score 5.

And ACP230's scores:

ACP230
Small Bore/Gauge
FIE Bronco .410 single-shot
2 1/2 inch 7 1/2 shot
Full choke
Score 4.

ACP230
Medium Gauge
Winchester Model 12 16 gauge with Poly-Choke & red-dot scope
2 3/4 inch 7 1/2 shot.
Full choke
Score 5.

ACP230
Large Gauge
Mossberg 590
2 3/4 inch 8 shot
Cylinder choke
Score 1.

Okay, that's it. Come on people!

I have a silly question, because I don't know from shotguns.... what kind of load is allowed? Does it have to be birdshot? Is there only one kind of birdshot? BAsically, what kind of shells should I buy for this match?

Thanks,
James

In this kind of match I think small shot is a good idea. There's more small shot per shell so more chance of putting some in the right place on the target.

We used eights, seven and a halfs, and sixes. I would have used eights in all gauges, but didn't have any on hand for the 16 or the .410.

My first time for a THR match! I shot one of the early ones but didn't get the target sent in time.

Small Bore:
Cheap 410 single shot, unmarked but probably full choke
Winchester 2.5 inch AA #9 shot
Score-9

Medium:
Stoger 20 gage double barrel, left barrel, unknown choke
Remington 2.75 #8 shot
Score-6

Large:
Savage 24T, 12 gage with extra full turkey choke
Winchester 2.75 #8 shot (featherlight load)
Score-24

The 12 did what I expected, that's what it is made for. The 20 I thought was choked a bit tighter than that, it used to be my SASS gun. The 410 did better than I thought, but it is #9 shot.
