Setting a fox trap tonight.

Setting a fox trap and wants advice. My first thought was take a shower, shave close, don't use Axe cologne, bring a wad of cash, and wear clothes without holes in them.

Would a game camera be useful to accurately ID the predator?

The last time I set a trap was to catch a coon, so my dad thought. The next morning I had a skunk.

Not my first time so I just covered the cage and took it to the pond to see if it could hold it's breath for a long time...... Then fed it to the vultures.

DM, a lot of men have found themselves outsmarted by "dumb" animals. :p

Blue68, raccoons are the WORST about getting into chicken coops- little egg thieves. They climb and use thumbs. They figure out simple latches, too.

Still, I can't imagine a racoon killing 13 chickens for the sake of killing. That's gotta be a fox (or here, coyote). 13 chickens is a LOT of damage.

DM, if you have one, post a photo of a red fox that you caught in a box trap. That will really impress me.
I really don't care if you are impressed or not. lol

I just replied to the post "implying" that a fox couldn't be caught in a live trap. Dad and i have caught several.....end of story! :)

Update

So, I found the trap (we had lent it to someone), and I set it using a dead chicken and some small pieces of fruit. Covered it with hay to make it look a little less like a trap. I also got all camoed up and sat out till after dark to see if I could shoot the dang thing. No luck. If the trap doesn't work I'm going to try calling it in with a pup distress call. It's open season on foxes year round here in PA.
