So I am watching the movie HEAT last night with another fellow gun afficionado and we got into a debate about the rifles that Deniro and Kilmer are using during the bank heist. I was always under the impression that these were M16A1 XM177E2(with A1 sights) rifles with flash hiders in place of moderators. My friend said that he remembers reading on some internet gun movie site that the rifles are M16A2 Commando models 733. I noticed on the guns in the movie that they have A1 sights but with a shell deflector. I have never seen an M16A1 with shell deflector and I thought all A2 models had A2 sights.

I did some reading on the 733 commando and it seems (like all colts) that there are many variations in uppers including A1 tops, and A1 tops with shell deflectors
as well as A2 tops.

The guns in the movie HEAT were all full auto but it appears that the commandos were burst guns.

My questions are:

1. Did the Colt Model 733 commando use M16A1 lowers, M16A2 lowers or both. I have only seen the 733 referred to as the M16A2 commando but the guns in heat were full auto not burst guns. I know that several variants of uppers were used...were there any A3 uppers used?

2. What are the 733s rollmarked on the receiver? Is it the Colt M16A1 marking with the Colt firearms division
Colt Industries Markings
with the pony on the top

Or are they M16A2 marked?

3. Was this a Military issue gun with US PROP markings or was it mostly an LE/security firm type weapon

4. Any transferable 733s out there?

5. What rifle models were used in HEAT?

Any other info about this model would be very helpful. Thanks in advance

Your friend got it right.
733 models use the A1E1 receiver with A1 sights and the Brunton Bump shell deflector and are full auto.

The Model 734 is the same carbine with a burst fire selector switch.

So the 733 uses the M16A1 receiver? Everyone, including Colt refers to the 733 as the M16A2 commando.

Colt refers to items by there designated Model number.
I don't know who everyone is.
I used the Colt model specification sheet to help answer your question.
I also answered this over @ G.T.
