I have a pretty good supply of surplus 8MM Mauser, .303 Brit, 7.62x54R Russian ammo. If you've ever shot surplus, you know it's fair at best. Has anybody tried pulling the bullets & reloading with modern powder and then reseating the bullets? If so, how did it shoot compared to the original?

I haven't, because I've never seen the point- I'd sooner use a propellant I choose, instead.

But many people do, and the slang term for such ammo is "Mexican Match". Where that came from, idk.

Me, I appreciate surplus for what it is- cheap, generally reliable ammo.

The answer to everything is on the internet. :) Mexican match is where you replace the bullet with something else, not the powder.

However, civilian shooters found the .308 to be a model of efficiency and accuracy, and the military continued to refine it for sniper use, until today the round has a great reputation. Its popularity has led to entire series (.243 Winchester, 7mm-08, .338-08 among others) of wildcats and offshoots. Military snipers use mil-spec, 173-grain M-118 Special Ball bullets manufactured at the Lake City Ammunition Plant. Handloaders replace these with Sierra Match King 168-grain hollow points. The combination, first used to win the Pan American Games, is called "Mexican Match."
