I just picked one a Kimber 8400 Montana in 270 wsm myself. I'll let you know how my loads go when I have a chance to get some worked up.

I have heard the WSM’s don’t feed well in controlled round actions. The sides are too straight and don’t steer at all. That is one reason why military cartridges have lots of taper, another is that when a tapered cartridge relaxes it comes off the chamber walls at an angle, providing more clearance and less extraction friction. The 308 is about the limit on a military cartridge for straightness. There was lots of concern at the time it was developed whether it would work.

You have to be careful with the Short Magnums as they really increase the stress on the bolt. To get the powder necessary for these high velocities in a short case the designers had to widen the case. Bolt loading is the product between the surface of the back end of the case and peak pressure. The back end of the case is a circle and if you remember the area is pie X radius squared. The load effectively increases by the square.

So you hot load one of these things you are putting a lot of load on the lugs and receiver. The M70 is a legacy system designed as it was around the 375 H&H, but that cartridge never ran as hot as a WSM, and people who buy WSM’s are not looking for 270 Win velocities, sometimes when WSM reloaders add a pinch of powder for luck, things break.

This is a 300 WSM. Don’t know the story, could be a bad bolt, but I think it is a combination of hot loads and bad bolt.

just picked up another 270 wsm. this one a savage 11 hunter black synthetic with accu stock. did you know that savage is now marketing a new detachable mag with plastic release? Man that release looked like it could sure break to me. glad mine is the metal one hooked to the rifle. the savage is a different animal from the kimber. bigger and heavier barrel profile. in fact even though its a short action with a 24" barrel it's actually longer over all than my 257 weatherby mag vanguard with 24" barrel. And I believe it to be slightly heavier as well. On the bright side, it really looks like a hell of an accurate plains gun. cant wait to see how it does. also another wierd quirk with the savages: the new hinged floorplate models with accustock actually latch at the front near the hinge rather than at the rear. I think savage ought to go back to the pillar bedding with the hinged floorplate latching at the rear so it don't rattle as much. Then they should include a free marine tex bedding kit with each gun. Also I am seeing that some of the new stainless models (16/116) are much more of a matte finish than the older model 16's

I have the exact same rifle (minus the accustock) It sure is a flat shooter, and drops deer where they stand with ballistic tips. My only gripe is the flimsy stock which I plan on replacing soon. The rifle has iron sights so I think it would look alot better on walnut anyway.
