I've got an ASM Texas Ranger commemorative Sharps carbine in .45-70 Government. It has the typical carbine sights of the period, which means, that I can't see them and find them about as useful as teats on a boar hawg. I plan to have the factory sight removed and the barrel dovetailed to accept a decent front sight, and would like to add a tang sight. I don't have practical experience with the Sharps sights and wonder what target shooters and other single shot hunters are putting on their BPBR rifles. I do not plan on competing with it, but would like to take it hunting. I reload this cartridge and will be using a modern propellant under 405 grain hard cast bullets, which will take down pretty near anything here. Just want to hear from folks who actually use Sharps sights for recommendation...midrange or short range vernier tang? Beech folding front sight? Don't need the spirit level globes, as this will be a field gun that may end up in a saddle scabbard.
