Sherriff refusing to enforce MD's MFSA

At one time the Baltimore City Police Commissioner was appointed by the Governor of Maryland rather than the Mayor and City Council of Baltimore. At that time the Governor could remove the Police Commissioner. Such a circumstance was unique to Baltimore City and hasn't been the case for decades.

The Sheriff is an elected official. The Governor cannot simply remove him no matter how much he would like to do so. The MFSA is dead on arrival in most of Maryland's rural counties. The Sheriffs simply will not enforce it. Yet another example of why an elected Sheriff is preferable to an appointed Commissioner or Chief. When law enforcement is directly accountable to the People it has a tendency to take its oath more seriously.

Tough talk for a law that isn't yet in effect. Given that the meat of this nutso law is enforced by the MSP...

Thanks for the kind thoughts, Sheriff Corley.

Sheriffs are likely the most powerful elected official in most states in the country, dating back to English law, and they can decide to exercise this power or not, as they wish. Like P.O.2010 said, they are elected and can't be dismissed by anyone except the voters.

Re Sherriff Richard Mack. The local sherriff is the law of the land and has the moral and legal responsibility to defend all constitutional rights of the people in his jurisdiction.

I'd like to see the Frederick County Sheriff take a similar stand. I don't live in MD any more (thank God) but he's a friend, a member of the same gun club as me, and pretty rabidly pro-2A.

Isn't he the one that tried to start a push to have issuing carry permits moved into the duties/responsibilities of the County Sheriffs instead of the MSP, a couple of years ago?

I like that guy!
