Shield in 45 possible/likely?

Nothing has ever been said - only speculation on forums. No one knows yet, I think...

That covers the "likely" part, how about "possible".

Could the current frame work or would the 45 have to be slightly larger?

Well, the gun was announced and then hit shelves immediately after - much better than an announcement, and then ya wait 6 months for the gun.

So, they kept it quiet. I guess we won't know until some magic day when they pop up...

it would be a really neat package but if i were running the company i would be concerned that an early release would cut into my already robust sales of the 9 and 40. In other words instead of buying the .40 the same customer goes out and buys the .45 resulting in the same number of sales.

It can work the other way too, I'm not buying an XDS because it is only in .45ACP. IMHO .45ACP is no good in barrels less than 4" -- too much velocity loss to be confident of having adequate penetration.

A 180gr .40 S&W has the same sectional density as a .45 230gr and an extra ~100 fps in the same length barrel to help insure adaquate penetration.

The three most important things to handgun effectiveness is bullet: placement, placement, and penetration.

While I haven't gotten my hands on one yet I would imagine the current model uses a 9mm/.40 S&W sized frame, which means .45 ACP rounds probably won't fit. Just like the M&P's, they would have to bring out an enlarged version of the gun to fit the larger .45 ACP rounds.

I really hope they don't. The .45 would change the ergonomics of the gun and defeat the purpose. They would definately have to change some dimensions to get it to work.

Dunno. I asked that very question to someone I know at the company.

He said he'd not heard any rumors of a .45 version of the Shield, but that he also wasn't connected to the Shield project. He also suggested I not hold my breath. :neener:

The Shield 9/.40 demand is far out ahead of production, and they'd stock-piled a few thousand units before the guns were even announced so they could release them on the commercial market on the actual release date. They apparently sold faster than anyone expected.

I suspect they're going to remain busy trying to catch up to the demand for the 9/.40's for some time. (Remember that the .45 version of the M&P pistol line was the last caliber model to be developed, and it took a bit longer because of the difference in caliber size/length.

A Shield .45 would require a larger frame, and it's anyone's guess if they could make one that balanced perceived diminutive size against whatever the buying public might consider "adequate" magazine capacity.

Personally, while I wouldn't mind having a plastic S&W .45 of similar size to my CS45, I'm much more interested in the 9mm version of the Shield.

I figured out my preference for the littlest of the S&W 3rd gen 9's when I realized that although I've owned my CS45 longer than I've owned my CS9, and I've fired a few thousand more rounds through the CS45 for range training/practice than I have my CS9 ... I prefer to actually carry my CS9 over the CS45. It's just enough smaller, lighter & handier than the .45 version to be preferable. Easier when it comes to felt recoil, controllability & recovery, too.

The company might well have a Shield .45 project under development, or at least sitting in the wings ... but I'd not hold my breath for it until the demand for the 9/.40 has abated a little. ;)

I don't care too much for the current Shield, but if they do try and release a .45 they should really think about adding a little bit of barrel length to it. The only downfall to the XDS in .45 is that the barrel might be a bit short for some people, myself included. It's perfect for a 9mm or .40, but like the person above I wouldn't feel too confident with a .45 and a 3" barrel. Penetration is more important to me than diameter. Now if the current XDS had a 3.75" barrel with the same grip, we'd be in business.

Think of Glock 26/27 VS Glock29/30/36 size difference...the .45 Shield might be a good idea but it would most likely move out of the slim/ pocket catagory.
(the AMT .45 was a true pocket gun:D).
