I did a quick search and didn't find what I was looking for. What is the process to ship live ammunition? Can it go priority mail of does it have to go ups or fed-ex? I know I have seen the directions on this site before but i couldn't find anything. Thanks gun gurus,
    -Jake

A simple ORM-D label and it can go through any carrier, though they may require ground shipment and charge a little more. Note that I have received ORM-D labeled stuff through the mail before, and I'm quite certain it was Priority. It wasn't ammo, though, but it's classed just the same.

I shipped a case of ammo to a friend through UPS several months ago. You have to label it ORM-D, so I printed out a sticker and taped it to the box. When I went to the UPS store, the lady asked, "What's that sticker?" So I said, "It's required to ship bullets." She said, "It's illegal to ship bullets." So I said, "No it's not. That's why the sticker is on there." She said, "Oh." and took the package.

My friend received it several days later, so evidently, it worked.

Ammo MUST go by ground regardless of carrier. Most shippers resist accepting ammo for shipment and satelite stores will NOT accept it(you must ship from a hub). I have given up on shipping ammo because of the hassle. BTW,if you hide the fact that it is ammo from the shipper and a bomb sniffing dog locates it at the airport.........

Not true. Ammunition can be shipped by air, but it is not practical to do so. The ammunition would have to classed as a Division 1.4S explosive material and ship as a fully regulated hazardous material shipment under IATA/ICAO regulations. This would cost much more than the ammunition would be worth, between the HAZMAT charges and the weight of the material.

The shipper would also have to be a certified explosives shipper and certified as a dangerous goods shipper under IATA/ICAO.

Here are the DOT reguations for shipping small arms ammunition by ground as ORM-D material.
