My girlfriend and I are considering going to england in the near future to see some of her relatives. We want to travel by ship, and I was wondering if there are any special security measures that would prevent me from taking firearms along. Are ports monitored as heavily as airports now, since 9/11? Obviously security on the otherside of the pond would be a problem, but perhaps I could mail a firearm to myself while over there and the shipboard piece could fall overboard. Any input fellas, or should I just plan on taking a Louisville Slugger along as a "gift" for her "nephew".

I don't know England laws, but from what I gathered here, I think taking a gun would be a big no-no. As I understand it, even knives are a problem over there.

YOU CANNOT possess a firearm in England!
At this point it is next to impossible for even a Brit (much less an outsider) to possess a firearm there, and certainly no handguns.
It would not be difficult to get a gun aboard ship in checked luggage, but if you are caught with it you will NOT enjoy your accommodations for the rest of the trip. Does "brig" ring a bell.
Plus, if you get caught with it you will undoubtedly get your name on a "watch list" and will find it impossible to get on an airliner or ship in the future. (Other than the one you get sent back to the USA on, without getting to visit anyone in England.)
If the ship people don't detect the firearm and English Customs does it is quite possible you won't be coming home for a long while. When you hear them saying "Gaol" that means Jail.

Since we are on the subject of ships, my wife and I were thinking of taking a cruise out of Galveston this winter.
What are boarding procedures like these days? Anything like airlines? Can I bring my nail clippers and my pocket knife on board? What about my leather weighted bookmark? Or my [insert object likely to be stolen by TSA criminals]?

I just got off a Celebrity cruise from Vancouver to Seward. No weapons! They X-ray the baggage and run your carry-ons through a gate X-ray just like they do at airports. I had a pocket knife in the checked baggage and they caught it. Had to check it with the front desk. They were just coveing themselves. My only complaint with it is that their policy was not clear.
By the way, it was the cruise from Hell. The food was awful and the ambience (their term) was strictly Indian bingo.

My wife and I just came off a Hawaiian cruise with NCL. If other cruise lines are like NCL forget bringing anything more lethal than the above mentioned aboard. Every time we boarded ship whatever we carried on was scanned and searched and we also had to go through metal detectors. We did a port call at Fanning Island where some passengers bought sheathed shark tooth knives anywhere from 3" to 7". As far as I know there was no problem bringing them aboard.
