I have a winchester model 12 from 1947 that ive fired trap, field, and buckshot rounds through. I noticed that the bore has some niks, scratches, and near the chamber the metal isnt shiny and it looks kind of textured (sorry for the noob langage). Is this normal for a bore this old or should i stop shooting it and get it fixed? Thanks

sounds like it might be quite pitted. My best advice would be to have it checked by a proper gunsmith. to have it lapped polished and proofed might be quite expensive.... it may not be necassary many of us have shot guns with minor pitting. but it will be a whole lot cheaper than a hand or an eye.

I would run a good brass bore brush through it 6 or 8 times, clean it with some solvent and then examine the bore again. I would think a lot of pitting around the forcing cone could be a potential problem with pressure. I also may be completely full of crap. I would think some nicks and pitting aren't much cause for concern unless you plan on shooting some heavy hunting loads through that puppy.

Any doubt, get it looked at!!!!!!! Those old guns have tight bores on them.
