"shooter" hat?

I have a Under Armor beanie/skin cap type thing. it's super tight fitting and no visors so it wouldnt get in the way of ear muffs. I wouldn't keep the sun off a face or neck due to no visors but it would cover a bald head. I wear it when I play paintball and it works out pretty well. i usually just wear a baseball hat for shooting.

dont be ashamed of balding. im 20 and have one of the worst receading hairlines around. i make no excuses about it. its not like i can chane my DNA

on that note, a good ball cap or a boonie will work great. i prefer a ball cap since im younger and not many college kids wear boonies

Tilly makes some great hats! Expensive, though.

My favorites are the "folding leather" hats made by Minnetonka Moccasin. I've had my oldest one for twelve years now. Crushable, foldable, waterproof. Work fine under headsets. Under $40. Some models have a chin strap, some models also have perforations for hotter climates. Do a web search for vendors rather than buying from the manufacturer and you should be able to shave a few dollars off MSRP.

hats

I generally don't like cowboy or ball caps for shooting, although I own plenty of both. I shave my head, so I need to think about sun and bug protection during the summer months.

I have a Under Armor beanie/skin cap type thing.

+1 on these - I have Nike, underarmor versions as well as a couple of versions from bike companys. They are wicking fabric and keep the sun off as well as wicking moisture away.

Aw Come on!

My tin foil hat protects me from the sun and prevents my brain waves from being read by "BIG BROTHER".

+1 on Tilley Endurables. I have purchased two but have owned four. They will replace worn out hats no ???'s asked. They're expensive and worth every penny...U.S. not Canadian! ;)

Get a "boonie" hat, like the military uses. It is soft cotton, crushable, foldable, absorbent (for cooling when water soaked), washable, and has a small brim. It won't interfere with hearing protection.

+10,000!!!!

Khaki is great for spring/summer.

I keep one in the truck for those sunny 'range' days, and one in the shed for when I work in the yard.

Hats

I could use a good hat as well. One that keeps the sun off my balding head, neck and ears. I grew up in Colorado wearing a cowboy hat. I have a hard time wearing a straw hat though because where I worked we were told that "I won't hire any one who wears a straw hat or keep anyone who puts one on." Of course the boss had never been to North Carolina either. I generally use a baseball type with foam ear plugs. The dermatologist told me to use SPF 45 and quit wearing baseball hats. He's been freezing all sorts of spots off my ears, neck and face. That leaves a lot of blisters so I need a different hat to keep from being spotted.

I use a boonie-ish hat. Bought it a few years back at the Discovery Channel store. Khaki, with a leather strap to keep the thing from blowing away. There's a name for it that I don't remember. Hat-securer, maybe? Chin strap.

Anyways. It's stood up to repeat washings, a lot of rain, grass stains, being stepped on, rolled into a ball. Still works, just has a well-used look to it.

I like the Tilley hats a lot, although I have my little hat story. I was half way down walking into the Grand Canyon and stepped aside for the mule train coming up the trail. This guy had six of the FINEST looking pack mules I've ever seen. As he passed me he says, "That's an old Filson Packer," talking about my hat obviously. The hat was my everyday wear for eleven years at the time. I've since replaced it with a wider brimmed Filson. It was mighty dilapidated and he still recognized it. I lived on a cruising boat for twenty years and I looked at many Tilleys, bought a Filson. Either one would do you right. I got mine on the tight side so it never blew off, ever in the STRONGEST winds.

When I'm not wearing my MOLON LABE THR hat, I wear either a boonie, a Ridgeway, watch cap when it's cooler, or Pyle cap when it's cold. (Come to think of it, I have an OD issue ball cap-type cover I sometimes wear, too.)

Another vote for Tilley. I spent twice as much as a Tilly looking for "THE" hat that I was happy with, must have bought a dozen different hats. Finally coughed up the $65 and bought the Tilley, I was used to paying $10-$15 for a hat. That was 5 years back and have not regretted it since. Eveywhere I go I get comments about it. From, "Nice hat, where did you find it?" to "That hat is embarrasing!" from my 15 year old daughter. Kids just don't get it!

Keeping your hat on in the wind.

I don't have any suggestions for the OP as I'm a ball cap guy, although I do wear a sun helmet (like the old time GWH's of Africa) or a cowboy hat on occasion. Snowdiver's comment about wearing tight hat to keep it from blowing off, reminded me of a trick I learned from Clayton Moore's book on his career as the Lone Ranger. To keep his hat on his head whilst galloping around the range or choreographing a fight, he took a length of rubber tubing and inserted it behind the sweatband. He claimed that it was very effective in keeping the hat in place for strenuous activity, and could be taken out for more sedate conditions.

another vote for Tilly. I am fortunate enought to still have one I bought at there shop in Vancouver BC a week or so after they opened. (on Broadway near Granville)

Some smallbore shooters wear ridiculous long-billed hats with cloth flaps hanging off the sides of the bill. I guess they cut off that dang distracting peripheral vision...

I would post a photo of the insane-looking hats, but I can't find one. Maybe everyone finally came to their senses.
