Shooting .40 from a .45...

...doesn't quite work, as my brother found out. He accidentally loaded .40's into my .45 USPc, and heard an odd sound when he fired the first cartridge.

The gun and my brother are fine.

I ran a range exercise one time where an experienced officer managed to load a .40 FMJ out of the wrong box, into his Sig 220. It made that 'funny noise' you referred to and didn't work the slide, of course, but did get outta the chambe far enough to turn sideways and jam the gun. He just stood there staring at his gun (which had never jammed before, or since for that matter) in disbelief. I went over and racked it open and shook out the swelled .40 round (looked about like your pic) while he loudly proclaimed that he hadn't loaded a .40.... I said " Well, I didn't load it, so which one of you did it?" He finally laughed and admitted to himself and the rest of os that he had to have done it. No damage to gun or shooter in this case either.

I guess the lesson to be learned is that when you're loading up several guns of different calibers, keep the ammo seperate. Glad nobody was dented in your little ordeal..

Wow, that's a scary reaction! Not to second guess an officer who may have been in a lot more dangerous situations than I have, but if that is how he's going to react to a jammed gun when he needs it to defend himself, that could end up very bad for him, don'tcha think?

It might be wise for folks with ultra reliable guns to throw a couple duds in the mags every once in a while, or perhaps ding up one of their mags to keep just for range use and let it jam up randomly for that unexpected malfunction drill.

but atleast everyone is ok, thats a big oooooooops tho ...

that had to make a funny noise to say the least. atleast gun ate it and didnt leave any lasting marks
 
A guy at IDPA practice the other night shot a 9mm thry his 40.He has 2 Glocks,and brought the 40 but the 9mm ammo.He shot 2 shots before he knew something was wrong.the bullet holes were oblong!the bullet tumbled on it's way out.He was very embaressed.We all learn the hard way sometimes.:cool:

I saw lotsa cops do the "stare, stupid" thing with a jammed pistol in qualifications over the years, and if they did it again after the first warning, I'd ease up behind them and scream some combination of explectives laced with the message that the ^&%&)@# gun was not going to fix itself in a fight. Aside from being politically incorrect, this seemed to work rather well. I recall no third ocurrences.

We don't dent perfectly good magazines here. That's what dummies (the rounds, not the shooters) are for.

Yea, I probably couldn't bring myself to ruin a good working mag either. On the other hand, one could go out and buy one of Cheaper than Dirt's USA mags. They come pre-ruined. ;)
 
Glad to hear everyone and everything is OK, excepting one case of course. :p

More than a couple folks that swear by the 45ACP refuse to have a 40S&W in the house for this very reason.
 
I have a 9mm case that was shot out of a Glock in 40S&W. I save it for my 'Watch out and do not imitate the idiot' files.

Everytime I fire my 40S&W Sigs, I am always watching for my ammo and barrel, since I have 357Sig barrel for it too. I would imagine a 357Sig in a 40S&W barrel would be like a 9mm from a 40S&W. The other way around could be a KB! :what:
