Thinking of picking up fairly basic chronograph. Are the Shooting Chrony's half way decent? The price is attractive. Thinking of either the basic F-1 or the Beta. How feasable is it to set one of these up and use at an indoor range where you don't have a lot of table space? Don't think I will need the Master as I don't plan on using it on a tripod. With the Beta I was thinking I could store the data until I get home instead of having to write it down after each shot.

The F-1 is about $57 and the Beta is $79 and roughly another $20 to make either a Master. Any experience with these or similar ones? Any feedback appreciated.

Edit
OK, I didn't realize how far away from the chronograph you have to be due to muzzle blast. That kind of rules out the indoor range. Also makes the Master with remote much more desirable. Still would like to hear any comments anyone has on these.

Thanks

I have had an F-1 model for a couple of years and like it a lot. I use it mainly to check my reloads against the loading data while I'm working up a new load. I use an old camera tripod to mount it. On the rods, I used a black permanent marker to color the rods rather than tape to help line up the shot. I just write my data down on a tablet that I keep for reloads, then figure up the averages when I get home. Once I get the load where I want it, I just check every now and then, so this method works fine for me. I guess you could still use one indoors if you could safely set it up, but lighting might be an issue. They sell a light adapter for the Chronys for this purpose. I paid a little more than the price you stated but for the money and for what I need, it was still a good deal. There's a manual on their website, it's the same one that comes with them.

The first time I used mine at the range, I checked with the RO to see if there were any special rules I needed to be aware of. His only answer - "don't shoot the chrony!" :neener:

You may get more responses if this is moved to the Handloading and Reloading forum.

I am looking for a chrono also and I'm at a loss on what to get. ProChrono has one that seems pretty cool, but I don't know much about them. Out of these two brands and maybe other do you all recommend?

Shooting Chrony: Works OK when conditions are perfect, otherwise your data will at best be totally wrong and at worst suspect. Nice and cheap so shooting it doesn't hurt $$$$.

ProChrono: similar.

After using both of those with frustrating results for years, and after my S.C. finally stopped working I bought the Oehler 35P and never looked back.
