My wonderful wife bought me an Alpha Shooting Chrony a few years ago as a gift. I've decided that I want to "upgrade" it to the Gamma Master, mostly because I want the remote control. For the trivial cost difference between Beta and Gamma it's a no-brainer to me.

Has anyone ever done an "upgrade" with Shooting Chrony before? Just wondering if they just keep your Alpha and ship you a Gamma or ... ? They said it would take 2-3 weeks to get the upgrade back. I don't really care one way or the other as deer archery season starts in a few weeks so I'll be busy.

I was just curious if anyone did it and what happens. I'm hoping to get out and shoot through my .38spcl BE-86 loads and then drop it in the mail this week.

Acoupla years ago after researching the possibilities and trading some emails (and pics) with ShootingChrony, I had them upgrade the memory from the original 10 10rd strings to 100 (102, actually) 10rd strings in my Beta Master

I sent them the remote control unit and it came back to me, looking the same but, when I turn it on it no longer says it is a Beta, it now says that it is a Gamma.

Since your unit doesn't have a remote, sounds to me like they will probably ship back a Gamma ... but best to just contact them and ask how it will work.

I sent mine in at about this time (early September) in 2013 and it was returned by the end of the month. Total cost was something like $25-$30.

I have been very pleased with the upgrade. :D

before you spend more money on shooting chrony, you may want to check out the labradar and magnetospeed. obviously, they're a LOT more money, but far better measurement than the light sensors

Yeah, OK .... but ... those shiny/newfangled gizmos probably don't offer such a wonderful, arcane command structure. :D Every time I use my CHRONY it makes me feel so very '80s, so nostalgic for the good'ol'days of DOS and Assembler. :uhoh:

Kidding aside, I absolutely agree.

Before I upgraded my Beta Master while checking out CHRONY options I also looked around to see what new equipment was available, their capabilities, their costs and what folks thought of them.

For my needs, the 30 dollar upgrade to 100 10rd strings was not only very cheap, it was close to perfect. The only thing additional that I would like from my CHRONY is the ability to dump the data to my laptop. The capability is there but the CHRONY people have decided to make it neither easy nor cheap, so I still manually log the data at my kitchen table laptop. <shrug> Not a Biggie. ;)

heh, is the chrony printer option a dot matrix?

For $400-$600 I'll stick with my Chrony, but thanks for the recommendations!

I think the ballistic printer is like a printing calculator, I'm assuming with a rotating ball head or something like that. Although an old-school dotmatrix printer churning out perf paper at the range does have a certain appeal.
