I made a new friend this weekend past and he wants to go shooting...in New Jersey. What is legal and illegal to bring into New Jersey?
I am thinking: no NFA items, no drums, no "assault rifles" (ar-15, ak-47, fal, cetme, saiga 12) Are there laws on handgun magazine capacities? I am trying to get a vague idea before I call the New Jersey State police to ask specifics.

If you get caught with a gun in NJ you will most likely get arrested ,even if it is in the trunk and you have all the proper permits . most of the cops don't know the gun laws and the law is purposely written to be very confusing . most cops will just arrest you and let the judge sort it out .

I refuse to travel to NJ and I would not recommend bringing any type of firearm into new jersey . ( this includes BB/pellet guns, for which you also need a permit )

IMO if you want to shoot go to a different state or bring your friend to your state .

Bringing a gun in for a competition is definitely legal.

If your destination is in state, it also must be unloaded and in a securely fastened case or in the locked trunk of a car to transport.

also of not is that loaded magazines are treated like firearms despite any reference to such in the statutes I have been able to find. I guess some pinhead says that is as good as having your semi-auto weapon loaded.

No semi auto shotguns with a capacity of more then 6 rounds in the magazine. No magazines over 15 rounds. No semi auto rifles not in "post-ban" configuration. No pistols with a magazine inserted other than in the grip, or a foregrip.
