Smart guns are on their way....to New Jersey.

Sixty people crowded last week into a small room at the Bayonne police firing range to witness smart gun technology. Donald H. Sebastian, senior vice president of research and development at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), stood near an oversized screen displaying a real-time video of an NJIT policeman shooting an experimental handgun in an adjacent indoor range. Although there was no applause as shots rang out, the action demonstrated that smart gun knew friend from foe.

Our esteemed New Jersey politicians want to bring them to you.

Under New Jersey law, passed in Dec. 2002, only smart guns can be purchased in the state three years after personalized handguns become commercially available. Lautenberg said New Jersey's legislative effort to introduce smart gun technology should be a national model for the country. Once Congress returns to session next year, Lautenberg and Pascrell plan to introduce legislation modeled after New Jersey's law, so families across the country will be able to ensure that guns they own will not fall into the wrong hands

It's for the children, after all.

Corzine called the NJIT's dynamic-grip technology cutting edge and said that it represented a really positive step forward in public safety. "NJIT is involved in important life-saving research," he added. "There is no question that manufacturing handguns with advanced technology to limit operation can save lives. No child could pick up a gun and pull the trigger. The gun just won't work, and that's how it should be.

I expect that this will see court challenges when it gets close. I've been watching this for a while, and the gun only works 90% of the time (not counting the warmup period even if it does work). Police and the like are exempt, naturally.

It's the unintended consequences that get'cha. This will be the only type of handgun that can be purchased in New Jersey. That means no internet purchases of conventional handguns (Jersey doesn't recognize the C&R, everything must go thru a dealer), no transfers, and no buying guns out of state and bringing them back (out of state purchases must be legal in the state of your residence).

What a nightmare. We'll be out of this hellhole by then.

I am tempted to comment on NJ situation but THR and Art's Grammaw preclude my full venting. I just feel so darned sorry for you folks there - it's like you are an offshoot of the US of A - and yet attached! :(

I bet you this gun will quite working when it gets on the market. And I would imagen that "non-smart" handguns will be selling like hotcakes for three years.

THis is going to flop...

I just had a chilling thought. First thing we do is pass the firearms protection act, exempting gun makers from product liability. That vote may come up this week. Somewhere down the road, all new gun purchases will have this new technowledgy built into the guns. The gun has a 10% failure rate. A event happens where you need a gun to defend your life and the gun fails. The gun manufacturers can't be sued because of aforementioned liability law.

They're (anti's) are using our own laws against us.

I doupt this would happend. For one very few people will buy "smart" guns even in NJ. Quite a few companys will still make regular handguns due to market demand.

-Bill

Disagree on what? That "smart guns" will flop in NJ? For three years everyone in NJ will buy "dumb guns" and the company offering "smart guns" will go belly up or take them off the market.

-Bill

Police officers get shot with their own guns frequently.

Will police officers be using "smart" guns too?

NJ expemts the police from having to buy "smart guns".

I disagree on wether that this would happen or not. If it becomes law, it will happen.

For three years everyone in NJ will buy "dumb guns" and the company offering "smart guns" will go belly up or take them off the market.

This is a moot point as it will not change the law. The law will still be in effect. Everyone turning 21 after this enactment date will be forced to buy safe guns. It matters not if there is a company selling them or not.

call me silly but...

The reason the police are exempt is? And this reasoning doesn't apply to civilians because they are a lesser class and don't deserve the same assurances and properly working equipment?

You know there is enough that can malfunction on conventional firearms. The more you add the more that can go wrong.

If I am right in my reading of the posts above, there will be a three year span that will allow REAL guns to be purchased. I would hope residents would take advantage of that...

I might be misunderstanding the liability law, but I don't think gun manufacturers are exempt from liability, they're exempt from liability when their products are misused. In much the same fashion, GM is exempt from liability when a drunk uses a GM vehicle to kill a family - this does not mean GM isn't liable if the car fails to brake 10% of the time.

I'm pretty sure the "gun manufacturers are exempt from product liability" line is a bald-faced lie spouted by antis to demonize the bill, so they can claim that gun manufacturers should "be treated the same as all other industries," when in fact the bill does exactly that. Gun manufacturers would be indemnified against harmful results of misues of their product, but liable for product defects.

Please, someone correct me if I'm wrong - because if I am, then my support for the bill is in error.

Police and the like are exempt, naturally.
NJ gun owners should lobby - HARD - to eliminate this exemption. Police officers deserve ALL that can be done to ensure their safety, HOW DARE the politicians DENY them the latest technology to protect officer's lives!!!

The governor's own executive protection detail and the LEOs providing security in government buildings, courts, and meetings of the state legislature should be the first ones REQUIRED to use this valuable life saving technology.

Immediately.

Man, from under what rock do these New Jersey politicians crawl?

It was a NJ Senator that got the NFA registry closed in 1986. They aren't satisfied with treating their own constituents like dirt as regular politicians do...they want to treat everybody like dirt!

The NRA or the GOA needs to fund a study into the formative years of the Feinsteins, Schumers, Lautenbergs, and the rest of their ilk. See if some kind of treatment can be developed to prevent this pathology. Did their parents steal their toys when they were small or what?

"pricing out of the market"

Also in 2003, NJIT signed an agreement with Metal Storm, which owns a patent for its Electronic Firing System that can be used in a handgun. Metal Storm's O'DwyerTM VLe® system is a unique, patented approach to firing projectiles. Entirely electronic, the system utilizes preloaded barrels holding multiple projectiles that are fired by electronic ignition. For the first time, interchangeable and multiple barrels can be made available to fire a range of projectiles of varying calibers from the same handgun.

Somebody else raised the issue of "magazine bans" and legislation banning guns that "could" take a magazine holding more than X number of rounds. If the O'dwyer only reloads with these "pre-loaded barrels," and the company makes "+10" barrel for any purpose (.gov, LEO, etc.), then the "Smart Gun" would be banned because it "could" hold more than 10 rounds. But we would only be allowed to buy a Smart Gun.

Not to mention the fact that the MetalStorm website discusses the full-auto capability of their system. NFA registry, anyone? Calling all hackers . . .

And my title of this post goes to just how much these "pre-loaded barrels" will cost. Will they be disposable? Will they be reloadable? If they only hold less than 10 rounds, you would have to buy at least 5-10 for a normal range session. I could see that adding up $$$ big-time. :scrutiny:

Edited to add:

These "pre-loaded barrels" work by lining the rounds and propellent one after the other in the barrel. This would foreseeably result in differing velocities and possible POI/accuracy of the different rounds fired from the same barrel/magazine.

Did their parents steal their toys when they were small or what?

maybe their parents stole their toy GUNS and now they're projecting that onto everyone they rule (the rest of us have elected officials, but NJ has elected royalty - the rules don't apply to them!).

The law says three years after smart guns become commercially available, not three years after NJIT makes one prototype for testing. The clock isn't ticking yet.

I'm sure they were all spoiled rotten and taught they're much more special than commoners.

In ref 'commercially available'....

The law specifically states that matter is up to the Attorney General to decide. Only one person in New Jersey has to buy the gun for it to be commercially available.

In ref 'cop exclusion'....

The law states that there must be a blue ribbon panel to study the gun for six months to decide if the cops must use it or not. A recent Trentonian (newspaper) study found that just over 50% of police shootings are with their own gun...I think they need it more than we do. But they would never be forced to use it.

In ref 'Metal Storm'....

MetalStorm already has a gun. They estimate that it will be mated to the NJIT technology by January 2006. They preload barrels which can be swapped out for reloads (expensive?) They also make a 'bean bag' shell...suppose that's all that the politicians would allow in this gun?

In ref 'Grandfathering'

No provision. The politicians say they will address that subject when the law goes into effect.

New Jersey is one of six states (the usual suspects) without a a 'keep and bear arms' provision in it's state constitution.

Note that certain types of (sanctioned) clubs are exempt from the sales ban...at the whim of the Attorney General again. The gun shop/range I go to is already looking into creating a sanctioned shooting club with its 1300 members so they can keep selling guns...of sanctioned shooting sport types. Of the 7 hand guns I own, only one might be considered proper for a sanctioned shooting sport (my 1911)...my Luger, Snubbie, 2 Derringers, Mak, and P22 would not be sanctioned. My .357 Trooper might be used in some sport, I don't know.

Unfortunately if this law goes into effect, it will put most of the few remaining gun shops out of business in Joisey.

Note: This could easily be the one that goes to SCOTUS for a definative 2A ruling....

The laws is already on the books. Smart guns have to be "commercially available" for it to take effect. Anyone turnning 21 during those three years will be able to buy a dumb handgun.

If smart guns become no longer "commercially available" due to no one buying them, NJ courts may very well rule that this law no longer applys.

They have had ruled that AR-15s and AK-47s were legal as long as they were not called that.

No they will use your (my) tax dollars to keep it afloat.
Sort of like our collapsing schools or our airline industry.

Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but I say let them do whatever they want. The whole "smart gun" movement will go horribly wrong and the truth will come out. Also, the market ultimately drives consumer behavior. The used gun market will explode, the black market will thrive and more truth about gun-control in general will be exposed.
At worst, New Jersey will continue to be a shining example of what a state can become when the citizens are fat and complacent (not to mention stupid). Appologies for those who still live in New Jersey, but it's your choice to stay there.
By the way, oppressive governance and an overwhelming need to control the lives of others doesn't even remotely stop at firearms. The corruption is so out of control there's no place to start. For example, MASSIVE dollars are being sucked out of communities to spread around to the underprivileged school districts at a huge scale. The stories are now starting to surface how the "do it for the kids" money is being spent. It's a lot worse than you think, but not enough New Jerseyans really care. ****'em, I guess.
