Shooting laying down

shooting laying on your back is called "supine" it is something that i train on alot and practice. in the context of many dynamic critical incidents it is very likly that you will end up on your back and or in some unorthodox position, just because you are down doesn't mean that you are of the fight. I have a drill that i run called the fight to your feet. supine, to sitting, to kneeling, to on your feet and getting to cover and away from the enemy.

don't stop there, train in any and all positions that you could ever be in in a fight for your life. doing for the first time in a fight is the wrong answer.

Were you prone or on your side? Either way great story, reminds me of a few encounters I've had with wild animals.

One night about two years ago we awoke about 3Am to 3 of those suckers in the pool, doing a remake of Beach Blanket Bingo. They "do their business" in the water. With my 2 dogs, a Lab and Rott freaking out they kept doing backflips in the pool, lights on and all. I couldn't do much about it in Broward County, as the law says that they were there first. But they cracked us up until I had to clean out the pool the next day. Nervy suckers, and well fed. I wouldn't let the dogs out because of the rabies. No more pool now in Vero, but some things you don't forget.

gym, I know it wasn't funny at the tme, but have you ever thought about the prize money you could have won on the "Funniest Videos" show? Had to be a hoot!

Klineia, one shoots skunks at 1000 yards.:what:

I wish I wold have had my camera handy, we did think of it later, but I just couldn't take my eyes off them. They were looking at us through the window, and partying like 1999.

I would think a #4 would have been perfect for that raccoon
yeah but I only had that in the 16 gauge and I didn't wanna get the mud on the old 1100 :) . I suppose I should pick up more variety of 12 gauge shells. I don't have a .22 and the AK seemed a tad excessive too, and not to mention the 30 rd mag would make getting low enough kinda hard.

The coon or the metal building?
This made me laugh, but the holes were in the raccoon.

Were you prone or on your side?
I was laying on my stomach, so prone.

I am going to find me a range I can shoot a variety of weapons from prone and other positions besides standing or sitting. If you have never shot like that it feels way different. I have a feeling that I just have to try shooting laying on my back, I bet thats the most awkward of all.

I dare you to try shooting a skunk with buckshot.
Heaven forbid I hope I never find myself within shooting range of a skunk without a HAZMAT suit.

And to all the negative nancy's out there maybe I did kill a poor defenseless animal who knows, but i'm not taking my chances, not any more than if someone breaks in my house will I take a chance that they might not rob me or hurt me.

"...having rabies came to mind..." You need to learn something about rabid 'coons. They don't run away and they stop being nocturnal. You disturbed his foraging and nothing else. You killed a game animal, for no good reason, out of complete ingnorance. You should have left Rocky alone.
"...I learned a thing or two..." Not enough.
Oh and moving to an urban house wouldn't matter.
"...00 Buckshot is for bucks..." Unreliable at best. Totally useless past 30 yards with a full choke

Umm first of all, it being a game animal or a furbearer/varmint depends on state to state or country to country law. Your Province might call them a game species, where as my state considers them a fur-bearer. State wide, there is an open season on racoons year round. If we are hunting/shooting them, we only need a hunting liscense and there is no quota/limit.

2nd, that animal didnt suffer one bit. Close range with 3" 00buck is very humane. Even if i didnt like the fact he killed it, astleast he used a shotgun instead of an air rifle like some people do.

If you have the luxury of open country with a hill for a backstop, you should practice shooting from unconventional positions. When I had such a luxury, I would do so with my handguns.

A 22 would have worked just fine and it would have felt so much better. Hissing does not indicate it is rabid. It's normal. What noise do you think they make when you catch one along the trapline? Their behavior is a better indicator relative to humans.

I'd have shot that coon. It is a nuisance animal and could well have been rabid.

No point getting all wild-eyed over it.

12 gauge with 00 Buck is slightly overkill but it got the job done. :)

not any more than if someone breaks in my house will I take a chance that they might not rob me or hurt me.

Yeah, cause we all know a hungry raccoon foraging for food is synonymous with a gang of armed home invaders.

People have some strange opinions. Wild animals should have a natural fear of humans. If the racoon was too stupid to exit the property after it was confronted, I would have shot it also. If an individual doesn't mind sharing their yard and pet food with the raccons, that is certainly their decision to make.

Wild animals should have a natural fear of humans.

Just to clarify, the raccoon had such a fear. That's why it sought shelter under the shed. It was trying to get away.

I have to admit that the raccoon did show a fear of humans by hiding under the shed. However, to further clarify, the animals evasive action was clearly not adequate.
