    An aspect I didn't like...

    O. D. 92 f (There's gotta be a story behind a handle like that!)--One of your questions asked my primary purpose in owning firearms, and only allowed one answer.

I have some firearms that are family heirlooms, and keep those strictly for the family history. I have some firearms for target shooting. Some for hunting. Some just for plinking. One specifically for home defense (and pity the poor burglar I catch with it!)

But none of these are my PRIMARY purpose for having/using firearms to the exclusion of any one of the others. I just like guns. I'm a shooter.

So IMHO, this one question in your survey should have been constructed differently.

Hope you'll share your results with us when the project is done!

Not to nitpick, but none of has a "gender." Gender replies only to gramatical entities. People and animals have sexes.

I also have an issue with the primary purpose of owning a firearm, kinda. I shoot about 4,000 rds./yr. at my gun range, so target shooting would seem to be my primary reason for owning a gun, or 62 to be specific. However, if for some reason I could not have access to shoot recreationally I would still have a firearm for self/home defense, even though I have never even drawn a gun for this purpose.

I put down "home" defense as my primary reason although "self" defense would also qualify (I can carry in 24 states although not my own). I believe that combining these two answers would give a more accurate picture of gun ownership. but I suppose this can be done in the final analysis of the data.

As far as the question regarding "sporting" use, I put down "competetive target shooting" although I do not compete. It was the closest answer for my situation.

    Good luck on your degree.

OD - what Smokey Joe said about the "reason" for gun ownership is the same for me. At least 3 of my handguns are over 60 years old, 2 more are 40-50 years old. Some are for hunting, some HD/PD, etc. Perhaps a text box where we could have entered "1 thru ?" as an order of preference/importance.

Last college Survey/study I did consisted of dipping my hand in ice water, answering questions, and seeing how mad I got.

I liked this one more. It wasn't rediculous.

That's not really correct. "Gender" refers to the external representation and is either masculine or feminine, while "sex" refers to biological makeup and is either male or female. A male transvestite is a biological male that is presenting the feminine gender.

The survey should have asked "What is your sex?" in order to elicit a male/female answer, or "What is your gender?" in order to get masculine/feminine.

    Great survey, though!

Done! Don't really worry about the questions---figure there's a reason for everything! Best wishes on the results.
