Shooting technique

I just pick got my first shotgun, and am looking for advice. Shells are $20/100, so I know it's going to be fun this weekend! What are the general things to keep in mind?

And specifically, what is the proper sight picture with the brass bead sight? It's got the ribbed area on the top of the receiver, what's that do? Is trigger pull the same as with a rifle?

And why is there a little screw hole in the toe of the stock, it looks like I could mount a tri-pod.


It's a 14" Norinco (Remington) 870, with synthetic furniture, and later will have Knoxx folder.

Point - don't aim.

Slap the trigger - no slow pulls with in flight bird shotgunning.

Proper sight pic will likely require you to pattern the gun to figure it out. Use a large paper target at 20 yards with a dot in the middle. Aim at it and shoot - you'll figure it out...

I have a 14" 870 as well. Are you shooting slugs, buckshot, birdshot?

Haven't shot anything through it yet, but I think the shells at Walmart were #7 shot, and I'd like to try some slugs just to see.

And Nortonics, about the trigger that's what I'd heard a few times, just confirming. Does that mean you have your finger off the trigger, and then bring it to the trigger and slap it, or does it mean that you don't need a slow, steady, smooth pull?

If you're going for slugs out of a smoothbore try federal's tru-ball...they often group much better than remington sluggers

Shotgun looks awsome lucky. I have a winchester defender 1300, and accepts 12G 3inch ammo, and i tell you, theres nothing as amusing as shooting a 3 inch magnum slug, it can be painfull but is tuns of fun, and does some major damage to whatever youre shooting at. Got my 1300 new and i'll never forget taking that first shot, and the next 7 ( hold 8) just got better. have fun with it.
