Anchorage police Tuesday evening took two men into custody after a shooting in the parking lot of the Dimond Center that critically injured one victim.
A second person also may have been injured but apparently fled the scene, and police were searching for him late Tuesday, said police spokesman Ron McGee.
The men in custody were being questioned, and no charges had been filed in the case, McGee said at about 6 p.m.
Police were asking anyone who might have information about the man who had been wounded by gunfire but had not remained at the mall to contact them, McGee said.
The shooting occurred a few minutes after 5 p.m. outside one of the north entrances to the mall in the parking lot along Dimond Boulevard, according to McGee. The entrance was the one closest to the Gap, he said.
What sparked the gunfire was unclear, McGee said. It also was unclear whether the man known to have been shot had been targeted by the shooter or was a bystander, he said.
"He has life-threatening injuries," McGee said.
After the shooting, numerous patrol cars converged quickly on the mall, and officers soon took two men into custody. The officers' presence and their investigation caused rush-hour traffic to become badly congested outside the mall.
However, apart from the disruption to vehicle traffic and the blocked-off entrance, the disturbance to mall routines was minimal, according to McGee.
"The mall is open," he said. "There's a small area in front of the entrance to the Gap that's been roped off, and there's a dozen or so cars inside the roped area. Police are looking around that area for shells and other evidence. People are going inside and outside the mall."
Officers were also questioning witnesses.
The Dimond Center was the scene of a shooting in one of its parking lots on Feb. 5. A man was wounded by gunfire on the east side of the mall facing the Old Seward Highway, and his girlfriend took him to a hospital.
Officers pursued three suspects east for about a mile until cornering them in the Fred Meyer outlet on Abbott Road. The three were arrested and charged with assault and other crimes.
McGee was unsure whether the two events were related.
"It's way too early," he said. "We don't know what this is about."
wonder how long it will take for the dimond center to post signs stating 'no firearms' at all entrances?
edit - it occured at the middle of the north end of the mall, best buy is on the east end.
edit #2 - i wonder if the ADN writer of this article has been bitten by a radioactive moose?
