Shopping around for a good looking gun

No, it's not.

Incorrect. That would be "handguns."

Then why has the term pistoleer or pistolero been in use since before there was such a thing as an autoloader? Often specifically to refer to someone wielding revolvers.

In some areas pistol means any handgun...there are even companies which have called their revolver's pistols.

It is all meaningless semantics.

What's a good looking pistol? I just got my first gun recently, it's a ruger .22 revolver. Now I want a good looking gun that has that slide thing that you pull back, I think they're called pistols?
Is this post for real?

CZs are nice looking. The one on the upper right, PCR, now wears Crimson Trace laser grips. Low letf is a CZ 75 B with wood grips and a Kadet .22 conversion.

Being an auto-loader has nothing to do with it. The technical and legal definition of a pistol is a firearm designed to be fired with one hand and possessing one integral chamber per barrel.

Oh, I warned of the semantics battle this would start.

All firearms that are designed to be operated with just one hand are considered "pistols".

The two are synonymous. Look it up in the thesaurus, since you seem so obsessed with the technicality. And on that note, if you wanna step back and look at the history of the word, "Handgun" actually includes all small arms designed to be used by a single individual, distinguished from gun, which would be a large, crew-served weapon (cannon, other artillery). "Pistol" became the noun that distinguished a small arm designed to be operated with only one hand.

You're not going to find technical firearms definitions in a thesaurus. Call the BATFE or any firearms authority, either technical or legal and they will agree with me.

"One hand gun." Also, at that time the revolver did not yet exist.

ATF also lumps SMG's, machine pistols, assualt rifles and gatling type firearms into the machine gun category. You gonna go around calling the M-16 a machine gun because that's what ATF says it is?

You can argue handgun vs. pistol 'til you're blue in the face. But in the end, you'll have a few followers, a few dissenters, and a whole bunch of people who just think you're being a persnickety jerk.

I just worry this thread will culminate with a: I just shot myself with a .22 in the thigh and I can feel it in my knee! What do I do?!

A slide-thingy is probably not the best information to make recommendations, but to make warnings.

Look here.

Those are all compact autos but most of them have bigger brothers. Look around for a good looking one, let us know which one you think that is, and then watch as some heads really explode!

Lets give the man his thread back and argue handgun, pistol, auto loader, and revolver in a new thread.
