Read an article about what Century calls Short Range and another writer called Urban Combat 7.62 X 54R. Full size with a 40g bullet at 3400FPS. Little recoil with huge fireball. Sounds like a hoot!. Accurate to about 150 yards. Explodes on contact. Anyone shot these?

7.62x54R is not a short range cartridge by any means. It is used in comm bloc machine guns and sniper rifles.

I've seen them for sale and can't say that I wasn't tempted to scoop up a couple hundred rounds for plinking and collection. I can't remember for certain, but I recall they were hollow core.
If they are truly accurate out to 100+ yards, I'd imagine they'd be hell on woodchucks and the ilk if you're the essentric type (as I've been described before on more than one occasion).

I've since shot this ammo and it's good stuff. Recoil is about same as 7.62x39 (which is to say almost none), nice big bluish muzzle flash; seemed accurate as anything (in an M-44 at 50).
Did notice I had to "help" feed the rounds with a finger sometimes as the round is so short. It may just be that way in that particular rifle.
Glad I got a bunch of it: when I'm at the range I like to make it a day, and dozens of 8mm and 7.62x54r full house rounds make me... tired, limbsaver or not.
Get some!

I bought a case of that ammo some time ago. It works fine in my model 38 at 100 yards, have not tried it at other ranges or in other guns. I have been told that it is very corrosive so be advised.

I've used several thousand rounds of stuff. 150 yards seems to be the max. range for good accuracy. It hits 100 yard targets fast, impact is like a .223. Much lower recoil but stiil just as loud and a large muzzle flash. The round nose bursts pumpkins very well. I bought 4 cases for $69 with free shipping a year ago, wish I had gotten more.

I just ordered a case a few days ago from centuryarms.com. It was $83.87 shipped for 1152 rounds. I'm anxiously awaiting it so I can try out the plinking abilities of the stuff. I'm like Ad, you can only shoot so much of the full power stuff. Plus, it's probably accurate at least as far as I am.

Borrowed a few rounds from a friend to try on my M38. Most fun with your pants on! Accurate at 50 yards. Huge flash- no recoil. Nearest thing to a HE bullet that is legal. Friend said it was used in Serbia. Bet Geneva no like that. Like to see the gelatin guy shoot some. Be a hell of a pest round. Ordering a case from Century.

When you guys say it has almost no recoil, can you compare what the recoil is like to, maybe, a different caliber or gun?

I'm pretty sure the hollowcore is Czech training ammunition.
I've tried it with poor results. I think the bullet weight is too low to be stabilized properly by the rifling, and the very bad groups I get with it seems to bear that out.
Of course it could be my rifles, but considering I get acceptable accuracy with traditional surplus...
I keep it around in case I find a rifle that likes it, but right now it just takes up space.

I've worked up my own short range/HD load using 123 grain SP's at over 3,000 fps. A 40 grain bullet sounds way too light, though. Are you sure it's not the practice ammo? Because what you describe sounds like the "M39" marked practice ammo. If so, it's not for self defense or hunting anything more than a squirrel or varmint.
