I'm looking for a short, handy, semi-automatic range toy to just have some fun with. I will probably mount a red dot, and I have a setup in mind, but I'd like to see if there are alternatives.

I'm thinking of a 16" barrel SKS, with a T-6 stock, and a red dot mounted on the gas tube cover (it has a rail on it, has anyone used it?) with some tapco 20 rounders.

How much should I expect to pay for a norinco or regular M59?

Also, would I be better off with an AK? The regular WASR stock doesn't fit me, but there are alternatives.

Oh, and how hard are saigas to convert to galil mags?

Note: I already own a hi-pont carbine, and a 10/22, and a yugo M59/66 SKS, and a mosin nagant. (it seems that these are always mentioned when someone asks about fun range guns)

Thanks guys.

I prefer the AK's over the SKS for something like this. A stock AK is what a tricked out SKS is trying to be.

I'd leave the AK's stock alone until you get used to it. Its actually no shorter than any of the other combat rifles and the SKS's LOP is actually shorter.

If your going to convert the Siaga, I'd go with the AK mags, as they are cheaper and more plentiful.

Here is an alternative! This little gun is a lot of fun.

Heh, I've seen those Kel-tecs, but they are just out of my price range, and I'm looking for something with a stock.

Well probably out of your price range too (and still non-existent in production) but at 26" overall length for the 18" barrel .308 semi-auto, that new Keltec bullpup is probably the most compact semi-auto you can own without an SBR stamp (6" shorter than a collapsed M4).
