I have a relative that has a short shotgun {pistol like} that has been in there family since 1930's I have not seen it do not know the make.I told her it was probally illegal to own.She knows nothing about guns or the law.Can she in any way get a permit to own it and pass down to her son.It belonged to her father. It may be a Auto Burglar gun but I doubt it.I really dont wont to handle our see it if there is no way to make it legal.

a shotgun with a barrel shorter than 18" normally illegal.
However, it is considered AOW, and you can buy a tax stamp to make it legal.
Someone wiser than I will have the details.

A shotgun MUST have a barrel length of 18" and a length of 26" overall to be legal WITHOUT any additional paperwork. BOTH dimensions must be that as a minimum.

It's not considered an AOW unless it's never had a stock on it, and you can't just buy a stamp after the fact to make it legal.

OP, you need to give more than a very vague description...

I'd not recommend that.

I'd suggest you see a lawyer before you incriminate yourself or a family member by interacting here.

I have never seen it.Dont know anything more than what I posted. She contacted me through my wife because she knows I am a hunter and know a little about guns.Guess I will tell her to put it back in the safe place she has it and let her children deal with it someday. Not my business anyway.I want no part of a illegal firearm.

If the gun is shorter than the dimensions given then it should be taken apart and the parts stored in distant locals. Find out if it has any historical significance and if not cut it up and throw it in a lake.
