finally got a break in the cold weather and got out to the range today to shoot my first batch of re-loads. :)

My 48 grain Berry's DEWC .38s loaded with 3.1 grains of W231 (shot in my Taurus model 689 .357 ) were funny little poppers...I had to check to convince myself that the first ones cleared the barrel! I'll be cranking those up a notch.

The 150 grain Speer flat points loaded with 32 grains of W748 did great in my .30-30 336....with just my Williams peeps I put the first two right in the middle of my 3x3 diamond at 100 yards. This ones probably good to go ;)

I down loaded 150 grain Berry's flat points for the 336 with only 26.8 grains of W748 (aiming for Berry's recommended max. velocity of 1,700 fps).....shot 3" below POA @ 50 yds and was kind of all over the place. :uhoh:

So I'm wondering just what the hazzard of shooting plated bullets to fast is. Think I'll bump these up and see if I can tighten things up a bit.

All in all it's pretty satisfying. Especially enjoyed not feeling guilty about chewing up $30 of ammo in one hour. Recovered all my brass and now have some ideas for tweeking things. Not ready to pound out any big batches yet.

Fun, fun, fun!

Congratulations. I'm glad everything shot safe. From what I have read the plated bullets when shot to fast will come apart before they reach the target. I haven't heard of them doing any damage to any guns. I would stay below max velocity with plated and go to a jacketed if you need higher velocity.

Congrats, SSN Vet. I shot my first reloads last weekend and also had the irresistable need to confirm that the bullets left the barrel. The range was iced over today, so I just came home and started working on another 200. It's addicting!

SSN vet. Just as a little information on the Speer bullet for the .30-30...My favorite load for my .30 WCF is the 170 grain Speer FNSP with 32 grains of W-748. I have no idea what the 150's fps is, but the 170 with 32 grains is 2050 fps from my Winchester. At a guess I would say you are at 2100 to 2200 +/- a few fps...

Hey SSN where in Maine?

I'm in Lewiston but I shoot at Falmouth Rod and Gun.

Ice on the range. ouch

i guess the only advantage when it comes to guns and living in california is. I can shoot almost every single day of the year. yesterday was 78 degrees here.

many newbies,myself included

start on the low end of the scale for safety, and soon learn to jump to at least the middle of the load range wo their ammo reaches the target.:)

Congrats on having a fun day shooting up ur own ammo.!

I read that it's the rotational velocity that makes the plated bullets "spin off" their copper. I can see that this would mess up your trajectory. Has any one out there shot plated bullets "to fast". I'm wondering if there were any positive indication, such as sharpnel in the target. I was getting numb and lost interest in tracking through the tundra to pull my targets.

I'll go up a step (I'm still way below jacketed charges) and shoot a couple more groups (I'll count five on the paper a group  ).

Because this rifle isn't scoped, I'm never quick to attribute the results to equipment and not myself. But then again, putting those Speer's through the diamond with peep sights does bring a wide grin to my face. :)
