Fuggin' morons. The babysitter screwed up and shot him, the design isn't at fault, it's the sitter's lack of training and ability to manipulate it safely.

It would make more sense

to melt the babysitter. :banghead: Why do people in our society insist on blaming opjects for the actions of people.:barf:

And to think people actually donated money to him. He should be suing the babysitter. No matter how you manipulate the safety, the sitter was pointing the pistol at him when it fired.

Free market capitalism. I think his actions are not motivated by logic in the slightest sense though. In econ class, one of the main assumptions is that markets are rational... :scrutiny:

Brandon, a resident of Mendocino County north of San Francisco, was shot in 1994 by a baby sitter who was trying to unload a .380-caliber Bryco handgun. Because of the gun's design, its safety mechanism had to be released to unload the round in the semiautomatic's chamber.

Every auto based on Browning's designs has the same safety mechanism. I bet the babysitter had her finger on the trigger when she released the safety.

I disagree with this. If markets are rational the we wouldn't have WWE, worthless gems, and other things that we have no need or use for.

I can see it now:
Clueless babysitter trying to work the action with the safety on. Finger on trigger, squeezing hard while vainly trying to rack the slide. Finally notices safety, and takes another grip (finger on trigger) and squeezes hand again in preparation of racking the slide back. KABLAM!! Whoops.

From some of the accounts I have read, the babysitter was giving him the gun to "play" with. I bet clueless babysitter didn't even know there are safety rules. Come on, how stupid do you have to be to say yes when a 7 year old asks you to get and unload his Daddy's gun so he can play with it?

Why aren't they suing Colt, SA, Llama et al, also. As whm1974 says, all auto based on JMB design work this way (safey wise)?

Classical economic misunderstanding. WWE, gemstones, and the like provide value to people in the form of enjoyment. It is totally rational for people to trade value for enjoyment - rational and smart are not always the same thing.

Just how old was this baby sitter? She wasn't around 12 was she? When I was growing up it was commen for 12 y/o(or even younger) girls to babysit much younger kids.

Anyone who owns guns and has kids should teach them gun safety, and MAKE sure said kids KNOW to UNLOAD them.

The most important part...

When I was 17 I wanted terrorists to attack my High School so I could save the day "Die Hard" style and win the girl over who I was too shy to talk to in real life...

Now I want to attack the terrorists in their "schools" (camps) and keep my girl safe from them... ?:uhoh: [wakes from latest daydream...]What was my point again? :D

If the antis want to destroy a gun company let them do it this way. Buy controlling stock in it and then run it the way they want. Thats the American Way and its a whole lot better than giving that money to cadre of lawyers for lawsuits or lobbying for some sort of stupid law mandating this sort of thing.

Somehow I don't think saving the day "Die Hard" style is really on the list of options for a quadriplegic. I bet he would be happy if he could wiggle a toe or have children.

"I disagree with this. If markets are rational the we wouldn't have WWE, worthless gems, and other things that we have no need or use for."

Markets are rational. The people who buy and sell in them are not.
The "market" is just a way of saying that sellers will respond to buyers, and vice versa.

70,000 -

In a VCDL mail-list update, Philip Van Cleve posted a synopsis of the story. At the end, he tagged this thought:
(But wait. Will buying the business make him the owner of its inventory? Is it legal in CA for a minor to own thousands of firearm assemblies?)
Now there is food for thought.

For those interested in gun related politics and events, joining the free VA-Alert mail-list would be more than useful.

He's more than welcome to do it... free market. If we limit what he can do with his money, there's no freedom. It's a pretty inefficient way to do things, though.

And when he's done, he can make toy soldiers

I might be more indignant if it took more to melt down a Bryco than a lighter and a can of hair spray. :neener:
