I never realized how much fun shotgun shooting is because I have pretty much have always have been a rifle shooter. Well I took my new Mossberg 590A1 out for its first outing today and it was awesome. I shot two games of trap with some friends and I managed to hit 34 out of 50 which I thought was pretty good. So far I see no need to really change anything to my 590 except maybe change the stock because everytime I mounted the shotgun I would have to push the shotgun away from me than shoulder it because if I didn't the top of the butt would hit under my arm. Do you think a shorter buttstock would cure this problem or am I mounting the shotgun wrong? Even with that problem I had a blast I can't wait to take it out again. :D

Its been recommended here before to spend time at home mounting the gun repeatedly in order to build some muscle memory. When at home and just watching TV, I’ll get the SG out and practice mounting for 15 minutes or so.

At 6' 2" and best described as lanky, I’ve not had a problem with the stock hanging up on the way to the shoulder, but I have partially removed some pockets from a couple shirts on the way down. :p

34 - 50 is much better than I did on my first try.

Congrats on the new Shotty. Enjoy.

Congrats. 34/50 is good for the first try. A couple things...

Practice mounts at home will do tons of good. See the floater at the top for Proper Mounting Techniques for good form tips.

Chances are, unless you're on the small side, the stock is close enough for now.

Stick with light loads. An oz load or the new 7/8 oz loads will work well for casual trap and enable you to get your form right.

New shotgun shooters get pounded because they haven't built the moves that enable one to ride out the kick.

HTH....

There is about 1 post every 2 weeks here about someone's plastic saftey on their mossberg 500series breaking. you might as well spend the $30 or whatever for an aluminum one and replace it before it breaks (which it will). I'm not sure where to get them because i dont' have a mossberg but i would guess brownells or midway.

The Mossberg 590A1 models don't have a plastic saftey.

I have the same shotgun and did what Dave and Rupestris mentioned - practice mounting the shotgun. I recall the same impression where I had to swing it out in front on the way up to make sure it ended up in the right place. I could still use more practice but it sure did help. I also purchased a buttstock pad (Pachmyer overmold) to replace the OEM pad. This reduced the length of pull about a half inch, which made more of a difference than I thought it would. A shorter stock still would be better, but that will come later. The shorter pad also made it more comfortable for my wife, who was happy to go shooting but was hooked when she broke a clay. The more she likes it the less protest I will likely get when I go shooting.
