Used 700x powder, 230 jhp rainer bullet. Unreal accuracy out of my Les Baer. However some of the flakes of powder were blowing back in my face and one my clothes. Is this normal for reloads or is it just the powder? I also found my 1911 to be very dirty after only 100 rounds.

How much 700x were you using? You may have been a little light.
My 230 gr jhp do well with 4.7gr.

In this case it's a good guess it's the powder, not reloads in general. I hardly ever get any unburnt powder from my reloads. That comes from using the right powder in the right pressure zone. The above question is a good one, how much powder were you using? Most powders will burn dirty and leave leftovers if you're not up near the top end of the pressure curve for that powder/caliber combination.

Agree with the others. How light? 700X burns really well for me with no unburned flakes.

It was recommended the lightest load was 3.7, which is what I used. I think, if I remember correctly I can go to 4.7 grains. At 25 feet, I blew the center right out of the target. I was very impressed, especially with my fast rate of fire. I was told to slow down at the range. :D

Gaistman,

That's lower than published loads for a LRN so you may be a bit under pressure for those plated bullets. You may wnt to try something closer to 4.4-4.5 on the low end.

What books are you using for load data?

Here's another possibility.

What diameter are you taper crimping your loads to?

If you're crimping to .470-.472, you may not be putting enough crimp on the bullet to hold it in place long enough to burn the powder completely. You might try a little harder crimp, .465-.468.
