...just bought a new field gun - 20 gauge Beretta O/U w/ 28" barrels (686 Onyx).

I had 3 identicle guns to choose from and all had similar balance points. Without ammo, the gun balances about 1/2 inch forward of the hinge pin.

Is this about right?

Sounds right to me. Enjoy.

One can add weight to the butt if you think it's too muzzle heavy. A bit of lead at the tip of the forearm(or a set of extended choke tubes) can move the balance more forward.

..thanks...

The other double guns I own have brass weights on the bottom of the stock - presumably to help balance the gun. This one has no weight installed from the factory.

..the weights on my other double guns are brass in color and are inserted on the bottom of the stock about 1/2 back between the trigger and end (butt) of the stock. I assume the wood stock is drilled out with a 1/2 inch drill bit and the weights are used to balance the guns. The weights are finished flush to the stock so they do not catch on clothing, etc.

....these are pretty standard fixtures that I often see on double guns. My new gun does not have any, however.

go out and shoot it! One of the nicest shotguns for a reasonable price. You'll never even think about the balance point after some time at the range! :)

Yah, I've owned a 12 gauge beretta O/U for 20 years and love the gun. The new 20 gauge makes a pair.

...I'm not sure about the functions of the brass plugs. I thought they are weights - but if you say they are for the owners initials, then perhaps that is correct.

...Hmmm If my new gun lacks a brass initial plug, how will it know who owns it? ...apparently, my other guns are clueless too!
