Shotgun for Deer questions

Our Regs state: " Deer, Bear, and cougar may be hunted with 20 gauge to 10 gauge shotguns shooting slugs or #1 or larger buckshot... "

Having never shot or at a deer with a shotgun I'm very interested in knowing what other hunters experiences are and what ammunition would be most suitable in a mod choked shotgun for humane harvest.

I have killed many deer with 12g slugs through a slug barrel. an ounce of lead through the boiler has always had a pretty significant terminal effect.
Some folks around here push slugs through thier regular shot barrels with good results, they've been doin it that way for years. Just realize your limitations and stay within them- ie range, accurracy, etc. If using a plain bead sight, you might be good out to as far as 75-80 yards but most will find 50 or less very reasonable. You need to do some experimenting with your SG and a couple different brands of slug. Don't waste money on sabot loads in a smooth bore.

We shoot roe deer with #1. shoot them in the chest at under 30 mtrs and it drops them like a sack of spuds. But roe deer are a small deer 40-50 lb. Small shot works much better than the buck shot sizes. We can use slug on fallow deer and wild boar.Never shot a fallow with slug but i would think they are very affective.

I've hunted with slugs in CA. Make sure you practice 100 yard shots, my first few were off :) Aside from that, slugs worked fine. I was using a winchester auto (don't remember the model), but it went bang and the deer dropped.
