I gave my 16 year old son a Winchester 1300 for Christmas. I picked it up at a pawn and got a really good deal on it. I've been hinting at since early October when I put it on layaway. Asking him if he's signed up for Hunter Safety yet, telling him he needs to read one of the several books on shotgunning that I have, teaching him how to disassemble and clean my 1300 (which he doesn't remember now, even though I showed him a couple of times). I put a huge emphasis on cleaning, which made Christmas morning very entertaining.

The last present that I had him open was a 12-gauge bore snake. He assumed that it meant I was irritated with him for not paying attention earlier with the cleaning lessons (at least he knows how to clean all of the rifles really well.) I let him stew on that for a few minutes. I got up like I was going to the kitchen to get something and made a detour to the front closet and retrieved the shotgun-laden case. He has really big eyes anyway, but they got huge when I started walking toward him. It was hilarious. :D

He said that his first thought was that I got a new shotgun case for my gun and was going to have him clean it until he saw that the furniture on this one was much darker beech (I think it's beech. It has the same grain as my beech M44 stock.) He squealed like a pre-teen girl who just got Justin Beiber concert tickets.

_NOW_ he wants to learn how to take it apart and clean it. :banghead:

_AND_ he's about 70 pages in to Shotgunning: the Art and the science.

It was Great!

Merry Christmas everyone.

Great job! That feeling you get when you give a fantastic gift is what makes this time of the year special. Good choice in boomsticks, too.

THAT is a Christmas memory to be enjoyed for many years to come!

Bah, Humbug!

I have no sons to share that experience with and my daughter, who is not an anti, doesn’t give a flip about guns or shooting.

I’m a bit envious. You have been blessed - revel in it…..Doc

PS - Thanks for sharing!

My dad gave me a Winchester 1300 when I was about 13...still my favorite gun.

Goes bang every time, with every ammo type, and does some serious damage to clays. He will love it for his lifetime

Thanks for the story, Merry Christmas

Here's a picture of him with the gun on Christmas morning, reading a book on making weapons of mass destruction from office supplies. Seriously. It's pretty good.

I got a Winchester Ranger 120 from my dad when I was 14. I had it for years until it was moved from its normal storage area by my mother in law when she was living with us while their condo was being finished. She put it in our basement which seeped water all the time. When I finally figured out where it was, it was beyond repair. The receiver was fine, being aluminium, but nothing else was.

I picked up my new 1300 a year or two later at a pawn shop, but in my mind, it's still the gun my dad gave me. He also gave me his beater spanish mauser M44 about 10 years ago. But that was mostly to get it out of the house, since he's not really much of a gun person anyway.

I got a Winchester 1300 20 gauge 21 years ago at Christmas from my dad, my son will be 3 soon and it is getting passed on to him. I have harvested alot of game with it, haven't used it much in the last 13 years as on my 18th birthday I bought an 870 Wingmaster 12 gauge and for the last 7 years I have been shotgunning with my Beretta 391 20 gauge.

Fantastic gift for your son if you ask me!
